Following-up on informal project security discussions at OpenInfra Days NA 2024

Greetings everyone, This week at OpenInfra Days NA, I held a session on resurrecting the project security discussion[0]. I had intended to resurrect this discussion for the past few months, but I was stuck in the middle of dealing with two CVEs. Furthermore there was a leadership meet and greet session where some of the discussion continued as well. At a *high* level, the consensus surfaced in the discussion that the Open Regulatory Compliance working group was the best path to try to identify recommendations and requirements as it relates to what we will likely want to assert for projects and our communities in terms of legal requirements coming from the compliance frameworks. The discussion then pivoted to management of security vulnerability management within projects. Goutham Pacha Ravi, the chair of the OpenStack Technical Committee, was present and agreed that the committee likely needs to implement some sort of process to require projects to actively update security contacts with known active contributors each cycle. Furthermore, consensus in the room surfaced that the OpenStack VMT should likely become mandatory for all OpenStack projects. It should be noted, at present it is not mandatory. It is important to note, this is only the beginning of the discussion of specific changes, and we'll want to follow-up with the Technical Committee in the near future and, depending on those discussions, then make recommendations to our other projects. The concept of a minimum threshold pool of security contacts for each project was also briefly discussed, but it was quickly recognized that it would be a hard policy to implement. An interesting idea came up regarding having some sort of required yearly security training for contributors. While an intriguing concept, there was no specifics on how that might work. One last item to note: During a community leadership meet and greet session[1], some frustration was expressed by community members as to what they perceived as "pressure to retire projects". Specifically the example was the OpenStack Freezer project which was not being actively maintained. The community members sought to understand why there was any pressure. As we are aware, these sorts of decisions revolve around risk management, and we were able to point back to the Murano issue earlier this year as an example why. Discussion pivoted to how might they be able to raise interest, awareness, and collaborators prevent such actions in the future. Understandably, this is difficult when community leadership has already made such attempts and no contributors stepped up to engage. Encouraging feedback loop?

Greetings Directors, I hope everyone is doing well! I wanted to reach out because I have had several discussions over the past week which have had a similar conclusion of need. This need is best described as an "active feedback loop". The approach the Foundation has taken over the past few years is to encourage members organizations to send individual contributors into communities to advocate for their problems and/or needs. I know feedback I have personally received is the approach can be successful for some, but it really depends on two factors. The individual's knowledge and skill in the community to self advocate, and the willingness of the community participants to listen. Obviously, depending on the individual project and what is generally going on, the results can vary dramatically, which creates inconsistency and increases friction of participation. Ideally, we all want participation and collaboration to be low friction, but sometimes low friction is just not possible without conveying the business case so the answer to the question of "why?" is mutually understood. And so I think we need to look at creating an intentional or active feedback forum where individuals who can speak in those business case terms can connect and discuss potential multi-member collaborations in the wider community. I don't think of this as something the Board of Directors should directly drive, but after discussion with Allison Price it seems like the foundation staff would like to understand if the board feels this might have value before they work on brainstorming. In an ideal world, I think we would want a forum of individuals who are somewhere in their career between "team leaders" through to "product management" or "business development". This would operate something like a Meta-PTG where we would discourage team level siloing, and focus on problems and challenges in general terms. From there, participants would be encouraged to reach out to collaborate in typical community fashion. The plus side is these individuals should, through their career experience, the business case lexicons and connections to help drive items forward. For those of you who have been around a very long time, this idea might be reminiscent of long past discussions from the early days of OpenStack. I think the decline in travel falling out from the pandemic has hurt the ability for some of these conversations to just happen organically as they once did. As such, I feel we need to find new, if even old ways to build connections enable more collaboration. Thoughts? Interest in participating should we determine a viable format? -Julia

OpenInfra Day North America Update

Hi everyone, I wanted to provide an update regarding OpenInfra Day North America (NA). During the last board meeting, we discussed a co-location of OpenInfra Day NA with SCaLE 2025. That still remains the plan. However, with the kind support of Indiana University who hosts the US National Science Foundation funded Jetstream2 cloud computing system, we are able to also host an event this year on October 15, 2024 at the IU Indianapolis Campus Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. We are evaluating an option to make this OpenInfra Day North America a two-day event on October 15 & 16. So far only October 15 has been confirmed. I will have confirmation on a second day (October 16) at the board meeting next week. We have already received some sponsor and attendee interest, which is really exciting! More information on the registration, sponsorship, and the CFP will become available on July 15. Following up from informal security working group - A security principal?

Greetings, Yesterday during the informal security working group meeting, we had a lighter and somewhat of a different attendance due to just the nature of schedules. We didn't end up diving into the high level requirement extraction which is where our first meeting started approaching, and in this meeting we started heading into the question of the principals and high level requirements as a starting point to building consensus. While we have some core themes we collected in the etherpad[0], what is likely needed is a stated principal or set of principles, much like the four opens. Something to set a tone is what is needed. It was noted in discussion that a principal could be as simple as an item in the project confirmation guidelines, but that might not set the overall tone required. I'm sure future discussion amongst the board will help bring consensus as time moves forward. One interesting aspect we need to keep in mind as we move forward, we're not just talking about aspects which relate to the foundation, but the expectations to have of our communities as well as expectations as it relates to how packagers/distributors engage. To cover some of the core themes, it was noted: - Open Infrastructure means a long-term investment in both trust and security. - No new release of software from a project should ever take place with a known vulnerability. This means guidelines and project level processes would be necessary as well, and highlights a need for an upper level principal statement to drive consensus. - Users should have a forward path they can take, i.e. to upgrade. One challenge I've encountered writing this email is we can be vague with a principal to set a tone, except any attempt to be specific begins to take us down the path of expectation setting. Setting a requirement is also easy, but expectation setting requires specific dialog in that specific context. As a result, I think the best path to a principal statement is reaching consensus along the lines of "Security is a primary concern for all OpenInfra projects, second only to the project's specific problem it seeks to solve." With an established principle, we can then begin to set requirements at the foundation level, and then engage projects to ensure requirements are clear, communicated, and are appropriately documented. Documentation is also critical as packagers/distributors and regulatory/market surveillance authorities will need a clear understanding of relationships and how to engage specific projects should issues arise. OpenInfra Foundation Staff Update - May 2024

Hi OpenInfra Board Members, I hope you’re all having a great start to May. Several of us are about to head to different OpenInfra Days in Europe and are excited to meet with the local communities! I wanted to share an OpenInfra Foundation staff update via email with some of the latest momentum and progress we are making since we are not having a board meeting this month where we would have normally presented this staff update. To best represent the recent activities, I wanted to organize them around the 2024 OpenInfra Foundation goals. Strengthening OpenInfra projects For the OpenStack project, several initiatives are in motion to improve the software through new releases delivering impactful features as well as improving project brand awareness. As we discussed at a board meeting earlier this year, Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware has provided a massive opportunity to the OpenStack and StarlingX ecosystem. Forrester reached out to us and asked for a briefing in which a group of several analysts said they were getting “truckloads of inquiries” about OpenStack being an alternative for VMware. We distributed a VMware strategy survey to OpenInfra Platinum, Gold and Silver members. With the information gathered, we learned that 82% of polled OpenInfra members have already received interest from organizations seeking a VMware alternative and 61% of respondents have already successfully migrated a VMware customer to an OpenStack-based product. 100% of members were interested in an OpenInfra Foundation ecosystem collaboration to make the most of this opportunity, which we will be kicking off in the next few weeks. We are also commissioning a third party report from an industry reporter who has covered the space for 15+ years. This will provide external validation with market statistics that we can all leverage. We are making progress on a whitepaper that shows the value of integrating OpenStack, Kubernetes and Linux. Kendall Nelson is leading the development and hosted a kickoff meeting last week with several volunteers from the OpenStack and StarlingX community. I am also working with OpenInfra Platinum and Gold members to create reference architectures and customer case studies. We are aiming to publish this at the OpenInfra Summit Asia in September. At the end of April, Llama 3 was released as the newest AI model claiming to be open source (it is not). Mark Collier took a stance in this New Stack article <https://thenewstack.io/open-source-has-a-definition-lets-get-serious-about-…> explaining why using “open source” incorrectly needs to be something we all band together to defend. The OpenInfra Foundation staff continues to engage with the relevant stakeholders to follow progress and engage as necessary around the EU’s Cyber-Resilience Act. Increasing OpenInfra Impact OpenInfra Days Europe is kicking off tomorrow with OpenInfra Day Sweden! We will have several Foundation staff traveling to the events over the next few weeks and are excited to connect with our local communities! Update on EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA)

Hi everyone, As promised we keep you updated on new developments on the Cyber-Resilience Act in the EU, a legislation that will affect everyone providing products based on digital elements on the European market in the coming years (not just open source). The text that was adopted at first reading by the European Parliament on March 12 has been published, you can find it here: https://www.europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document/TA-9-2024-0130_EN.html#title2 It is based on the same text that the Trilogue negotiations agreed to in November 2023, which we previously communicated to you when it was published in December, but is not exactly the same. You will find that the recitals and articles have been renumbered, but overall the text did not change much. One addition that is significant from the perspective of open source appears in article 2(48) when they define what they mean by open source: “Free and open-source software is understood as software the source code of which is openly shared and the license of which provides for all rights to make it freely accessible, usable, modifiable and redistributable.” You can see that in addition to requiring a license that respects base open source freedoms, they added the requirement that the source code be "openly shared", a requirement that is not encoded in open source licenses (only recipients of binary form must be able to request the corresponding source code). We have evidence that this was carefully considered and added on purpose, in one step that reinforces the permissionless innovation nature of open source. The process is now moving to defining the "harmonized standards", which translate the requirements detailed in the regulation into detailed technical specifications. Those are a critical element, as products which are in conformity with those harmonized standards will be presumed in conformity with the CRA. The Commission published a few days ago the draft of the upcoming call for European Standards Organization (ESOs) to produce such standards: https://ec.europa.eu/docsroom/documents/58974 Given that those standards organizations do not have a stellar record for transparency and engaging with the open source community, it was a relief to see that in this draft the Commission requires that "particular account should be given to the needs of the free and open source software community" (recital 10), that the inclusion of the open source community is documented in the ESOs work programmes (article 2), and that the reporting on the work includes a clear description of how they facilitated representation and participation of the relevant stakeholders (specifically including the open source community, article 3). The first standards are expected for August, 2026. The OpenInfra Foundation staff continues to engage with the relevant stakeholders to follow progress and engage as necessary. Informal Security Working Group

Greetings Directors, As I mentioned during our last meeting, I've built some initial consensus on holding an informal working group session in relation to security to serve as input into updating our project confirmation guidelines. We will be having our first meeting this coming Thursday at 8 AM US Pacific / 1500 UTC. Cancelling May 2024 Meeting of the Board

Greetings everyone, This morning the Foundation leadership staff, myself, and our vice-chairs met to discuss topics for our May meeting of the board. We quickly determined the staff has been very busy with press interactions and supporting the local organizers for OpenInfra days events. As such the staff had no pressing topics from their side. From the board side, we have one policy which we have been working on, but that is also not pressing. Combined with the schedule overlap with OpenInfra Days Sweden, we reached consensus we would cancel the May meeting. Anticipate the staff to share an email in the next couple of weeks to cover the press and marketing updates If anyone has pressing topics, please feel free to reach out to me directly. Follow-up on Board Topic - Revisiting security/vulnerability guidelines for projects

Greetings Directors, During our last meeting we ended up touching upon a topic of revisiting our project confirmation guidelines with an eye towards both improving overall security while also seeking to ensure projects have appropriate base coverage as the regulatory environment evolves. I would like to set up a call where directors, and any interested community members could join in, with the idea of overall revisiting the pieces of known regulation which may or will apply, and determining if there are any requirements we can identify or expectations we can set for projects moving forward. That being said, I also realize this next week is the Project Teams Gathering. Would any board members be interested in participating in the PTG on Friday. This seems ideal in terms of community overlap. Let me know your thoughts as soon as possible, and if we have a few folks interested I'll schedule a session for us as well. During the board meeting on Tuesday, I mentioned that we had OpenStack’s 29th release this week which was coming at a time when we are seeing increasing OpenStack demand. Follow-up on Today's informal working group session on AI

Greetings Directors, Earlier today, Eoghan Glynn, Phil Rob, Allison Randall, and I met from the informal working group meeting invite I sent out earlier in the week. Discussion focused around the creation of bullet points of what we need to tackle, which evolved into the general idea that we need to take on a three part approach to move forward. The first area of consensus was to draft a document laying out: * Set Common Understanding - We need to set the common words to be used and note there are two basic extremes. In essence, a spectrum from autocomplete to entirely machine generated output. We also have consensus that we expect code contributions to be made by humans, which may change as time moves on, outside of robotic process driven changes, for example requirements management or translation batch updates which occur today as well understood automated processes. * Build a common Identification system for changes - Where and How it was used. Reach consensus with some sort of labeling for commit messages, for consistency across projects. There seems to be agreement that this needs to involve identification of the tool and most likely some level of quantity or percentage. The overall goal being to get this into general practice sooner rather than later, and to likely adopt the ASF suggested Generated-By tag, in addition to some other Generated-Percentage or Generated-Level tag. Naturally we would expect the latter to likely change through the process of code review. * Establish bounds/guidelines for projects in what we expect, and what they can and cannot do. This likely includes alignment with the four opens so reviewers can attempt to determine how a tool might line up and if the contribution is able to be accepted, or not, based upon the tagging. This is the area we likely expect to explicitly name an example of what is not permissible, and possibly include a list of known tag values to aid consistency when it comes time to generate reporting. The second area of consensus is in the form of two specific paths forward above and beyond an initial guidance document. Allison made a really good point that we should not block on either of these areas. * We likely want to see some form of Attestation by the submitter of the change along the lines of DCO, that suggests "I've carefully reviewed this, I fully understand what it does, I have legal right to submit this along with a copyright assignment". In a sense, the DCO already sort of serves this purpose for some projects, but the variable of AI is an interesting one, and the consensus is that we expect there is a need for some cross-foundation collaboration on appropriate guidance since it is more than just our OpenInfra ecosystem. * We want to see a centralized review guide to both provide guidance of things to look at/for, and also help serve the pipeline of reviewers in general. It might have principles such as "does style conform?", "Does CI pass?", but this is nowhere near an exhaustive list and we expect some iteration may be necessary with our communities and projects to have the right level/form of guidance. Which leaves the next step. We'll provide a brief update during the upcoming board meeting[0], and have a call for participants to work together on drafting the guidance document. Once we have written words in a reviewable form, we'll reach out to our legal counsel for their input, and move forward from there. Update on EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA)

Hi everyone, Last month the Cyber-Resilience Act (“CRA”) passed a major milestone, with a common text being agreed upon between the European Commission, Council and Parliament at the end of the Trilogue negotiations. The text, which was until now only available as selected leaks, was formally published on December 20 within this communication to the Parliament: https://data.consilium.europa.eu/doc/document/ST-17000-2023-INIT/EN/pdf The intent and spirit of the text remains very much the same: applying CE marking and basic product security principles to software. As such, it is going to affect all organizations providing software products on the European market, whether they leverage open source software or not. That said, it’s clear in this version of the text that the engagement of a lot of open source advocacy groups (including OpenInfra Foundation) has led to multiple clarifications. Those clarifications reduce the disconnect between the text and the openly-developed open source model, and reduce the risk of global chilling effects around open source development participation. In particular: - The funding of essential project support functions, without the intention to make a profit, does not constitute “commercial activity” and therefore is not within the scope of this regulation (see recital 10 on page 10 and recital 10c on page 12) - There is now a clear distinction between the development and the supply phases, with the regulation clearly triggering at the supply phase (when the software is put on the market in the course of a commercial activity) (recital 10c, page 12) - Foundations should be considered “open-source software stewards” (as defined in Article 3 point (18a), page 76), and should be subject to a light-touch and tailor-made regulatory regime (recital 10d, page 13), exempted from penalties (article 53(10a), page 159) The proposed text is likely to be adopted as-is by the Parliament (see cover letter on page 2), so now is a good time to get more familiar with its details. Even if the text is adopted as-is, there is a lot more to come in the future as this regulation will need practical implementation guidelines. We’ll continue to watch that space and keep you informed of future developments – I’ll be representing the OpenInfra Foundation in conversations on this topic at the EU Open Source Policy Summit and FOSDEM events in Brussels in a few weeks. OpenInfra Labs pilot project archival

OpenInfra Labs was launched as a pilot project, supported by the OpenInfra Foundation, almost 4 years ago. The project provided a home for projects in areas such as AI, telemetry, and more, and activities that contributed to advance research and collaboration in these areas. OpenInfra Labs was created during challenging times, with a global pandemic unfolding and limiting efficient collaboration around the globe, and this phenomenon made it very hard for the pilot project to reach its full potential. At the same time, newly forming research efforts and organizations started to overtake some of the activities previously performed in OpenInfra Labs. These factors contributed to OpenInfra Labs reaching the end of its lifecycle; remaining community members have been winding down the pilot project, and are now ready for the final step. In line with the above, I'm hereby informing you that OpenInfra Labs is now archived as an OpenInfra pilot project. OpenInfra Foundation staff is working to complete the process, which includes deactivating the project's mailing list while leaving the archives available, making a note on the project's website about the archival, and making sure that other publicly available resources and artifacts of the pilot project will also remain available for future reference. Greetings Eoghan! I wholeheartedly agree, this is worthwhile to get on everyone's radar. As far as I'm aware, this topic has not come up before in the OpenInfra community, but we are a wide and diverse community. I do concur that this would fall into the scope of the board, in large part because we maintain authority over licenses and the acceptable copyrights. And as you've pointed out, this can quickly result in needing to dive into the license agreements and assignments which members commit to. Realistically, I think if we opted to permit AI generated code content, the content would still need to be denoted in the code itself under current USPTO guidelines, because the code in a single commit would then have two different sets of rules applying to it. One for the AI generated portion, and separately a human's influence over it. That being said, that is only my mildly caffeinated impression after doing some additional reading. I think a working group session may be a good starting place to collect thoughts from the board members. Update to D&I WG Charter

In preparation for moving off the Wiki to a more permanent page on the website, the WG spent our meeting today cleaning up the current content. While doing this we noticed that the charter was out of date, mentioning the OpenStack Foundation, just the OpenStack community, etc. We would like to propose the following updated charter to the Board for review and possible vote. Thanks, Amy In an effort to assert and facilitate the incorporation of diversity policies into its overall strategy, the Board of Directors of the OpenInfra Foundation (“Board”) is committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming place for all people to collaborate and drive innovation and design cutting-edge data center capabilities that provide solutions for our most pressing challenges. This working group sponsors and creates programs that encourage diversity and inclusion by identifying and removing the barriers that keep us from having a diverse, thriving community. The programs recommended by this working group will apply to the board of directors, foundation members, project leaders, contributors, and their associated communities. Each program has specific success metrics and the working group provides regular updates on all programs to the Board as well as the Communities. The diversity working group, like other Board committees, is supervised by the Board who has authority to approve its proposals. The Board may choose to exercise such authority by setting guidelines for the scope and implementation of such programs. The working group reviews existing Foundation programs and policies on a regular basis to evaluate their performance and effectiveness. The working group collaborates with Project Leadership and the Board to ensure that all programs are meeting their diversity and inclusion goals. Diversity is defined as all the ways people differ from one another including race, color, religion, gender identity and expression, national origin, language, ancestry, age, disability, medical condition, genetic information, military and veteran status, marital status, sexual orientation and other aspects. This includes elements such as personal background, experiences, education, thinking processes, approaches to problem solving and experiences. The differences range from subtle nuances to very clear points of difference – this is the nature of diversity. News on the Cyber-Resiliency Act

Greetings Directors, At our in-person board meeting in Vancouver last month, our lawyers at DLA Piper presented a landscape of regulatory threats and challenges that could affect open source in the near future. One of those challenges was the Cyber-Resiliency Act, a proposed legislation in the EU that aims at introducing safety best practices in digital products. Unfortunately, the initial text proposed by the EU Commission was drafted without much input from the open source community, and failed to take into account the specificity of our development model, potentially resulting in a chilling effect for developers and organizations involved, or the fragmentation of our global communities. We participated in the community response by posting our position[1], aligned with our partner organizations in the open source world. The next steps were to wait for the new versions of the proposed legislation as the EU Parliament committees worked on their own version, to see if they included any further provisions to protect open source or not. [1] https://openinfra.dev/blog/openinfra-foundation-cyber-resilience-act The Parliament version of the text was recently presented, ahead of the ITRE (Industry, Research and Energy) committee vote on the draft. I personally reached out to ITRE committee members asking to delay the vote, but the committee nevertheless approved it on a vote[2] *yesterday morning*. [2] https://www.europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-room/20230717IPR03029/cyber-re… The new version of the text now contains further precision to exclude from its scope open source software developed using a “fully decentralised development model”, which matches the principles under which OpenInfra software is being developed (the Four Opens). However, this provision is superseded by other provisions squarely placing any project with developers employed by commercial entities within the scope of the act, which basically covers nearly all of open source software produced today. The text also contains no improvement on the process itself, for example still requiring that vulnerabilities be disclosed to ENISA within hours of discovery, even if no patch has been developed to fix them. This is orthogonal to vulnerability management best practices (like limiting access to unpatched vulnerabilities to the key people able to fix them, or responsible disclosure), while making the ENISA database a single high-value target for hackers in search of unpatched vulnerabilities. Adoption by the ITRE committee does not mean the fight is over, or the text final and approved. Now that it’s gone through the three committees involved (LIBE, IMCO, and ITRE), the text becomes a proposal to be voted on by the full Parliament. It is unclear at this stage if there will be a specific discussion and a free vote on it, it will depend how consensual or controversial it appears to be. In parallel, the EU Council (representing national governments) will prepare its own version of the text, and in the end all proposed acts will be reconciled into a single version that will become law. At the OpenInfra Foundation level we will follow next steps with attention, and participate in any industry initiative to improve this text to take into account the specificities of our global, collaborative value creation model. More specifically, we collaborate with the Open Source Initiative, Open Forum Europe, Linux Foundation and others to coordinate and support industry response. OpenInfra Summit Vancouver Highlights

Hi everyone, Thank you to those who were able to join the OpenInfra Summit Vancouver in person as well as those who participated remotely or followed along online. It was a great week filled with a lot of energy from the attendees representing over 350 organizations from 50 countries around the world. I’d also like to extend a huge thank you to the organizations who sponsored the OpenInfra Summit, especially our Headline sponsor Wind River and Premier sponsor Okestro. A lot happened over those three days, so I wanted to share a few highlights with the Board of Directors: There was a lot of onsite excitement around the launch of OpenInfra Europe and OpenInfra Asia. The OpenInfra Foundation hosted an onsite meeting for each hub that was well attended with participating organizations asking how they can get more involved. I personally talked to several attendees who were attending the OpenInfra Summit specifically to learn more about StarlingX, which was great to hear—especially as the community gathered to celebrate its 5 year anniversary. Ant Group and Microsoft contributors met onsite to discuss increased, long-term collaboration around Kata Containers. The Microsoft team was very excited to engage with the community to have their developer team contribute back upstream. I look forward to seeing much more collaboration happen here. We had a lot of particularly technical keynote demos, which seemed to resonate really well with the audience. They covered everything from LOKI using Magnum to AI with OpenStack and an AI confidential computing use case with Kata Containers. October PTG Update

Hi everyone, I wanted to provide an update on the October Project Teams Gathering (PTG). After discussing with community members and prospective sponsors, we have made the decision to pivot the event to 100% virtual to make the event as inclusive as possible. I know that this is not the ideal outcome and there are a lot of factors contributing to this decision, but we think it’s the best decision for the community. We are continuing to receive feedback on the value and importance of in-person PTGs; we just need to wait for other factors to be less of an obstacle. We have already notified the participants who were already registered and provided full refunds. We will be posting on the project mailing lists momentarily. We are going to use the same week for a virtual PTG and it will be free to attend, just like the previous ones. The registration is already live [1]. If you have any questions or feedback on this decision, please let us know. We will continue to monitor feedback as we make plans for a 2023 PTG. OpenInfra Summit Berlin Recap, Health & Safety Update

Hi everyone, Thank you to everyone who attended the board meeting (in person or remotely) as well as the OpenInfra Summit in Berlin. After 2.5 years, the energy was palpable as everyone reunited with the OpenInfra family in person. It was great to see so many familiar, mask-covered faces. I know not everyone was able to attend, but we wanted to provide an update following the event as we collect feedback to keep everyone on the same page. Summit Attendance and Outcomes We ended up with over 900 registrations, which was the perfect size for the venue we had selected, especially given our focus on creating a healthy environment. Among those attendees, 57% were attending a Summit for their first time, and they represented over 350 organizations and 60+ countries. This provided for a great week of collaboration, hallway track networking, and getting work done. Some of the key highlights include positive reception to the launch of the Directed Funding <https://openinfra.dev/blog/open-for-business-open-infra-foundation-launches…> for OpenInfra project hosting. Thank you to everyone who helped move this forward as it led to several great conversations (and some promising leads!) throughout the week. If you weren’t able to attend and would like to meet 1:1 to get an update, please let me know. There was also a lot to celebrate including 10 years of Zuul <https://zuul-ci.org/blog/>, a new SIG forming around sustainability <https://twitter.com/knelson92/status/1534817786446462977>, discussions around the future of OpenInfra and AI, and more. Up next, we do have two more in person events planned. The next Project Teams Gathering (PTG) <http://openinfra.dev/ptg> will be October 17-20 in Columbus. Registration and sponsorship will be available in the next few weeks. The OpenInfra Summit 2023 <https://openinfra.dev/summit/vancouver-2023> will be in Vancouver, June 13-15. Health & Safety Update Prior to the Summit, we set a threshold of three positive cases before sending an update to all attendees. The timeframe was from the beginning of the event (June 6) up until five days of the event ending (June 14). To date, no positive Covid-19 cases were reported during the event, and only two attendees have notified us that they tested positive since, both within five days after attending the event. Now that the notification time period has passed, we are sending an all-attendee Health & Safety Update tomorrow with the above information. It will also encourage anyone who tested positive for Covid-19 in that timeframe to let us know so we can make sure we have the most accurate information. If additional cases are shared, we will provide an update to this mailing list, as well as all attendees, at that time. If you have heard of any positive Covid-19 cases from your team, please let us know. Summit it Berlin! Lets go!

Hi everyone, We are less than two months away from the OpenInfra Summit Berlin and I wanted to share some of the things that I am personally excited about! Our entire team as well as the community are working hard to make the first Summit in 2.5 years a memorable one, so I want to encourage you to make sure as many folks from your teams (and customers!) are registered as possible. • We have incredible speakers confirmed from organizations including BBC R&D, Ciena (5G on OpenStack), Kakao, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, Bloomberg, BMW, Volvo, Adobe, LINE, Verizon, and hopefully a return from Walmart who can talk about how they’re running 1M cores of OpenStack in production. • We also recruited Franziska Brantner, the State Secretary in the Federal Ministry (Germany) for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (Thanks, Kurt!) as well as Daniel Melin and Peter Nordström from Skatterverket, the Swedish Tax Agency (Thanks, Johan!) to talk about the importance of open source and digital sovereignty. • We have invited speakers from other open source bodies including the Open Source Initiative as well as the Open Compute Foundation to talk about our cross-community collaboration and strategy around open source in general • For those of you who may be facing travel restrictions from China, I wanted to let you know that we are working with the OpenInfra Days China organizers to bring the best of the Summit to the China event later in the Summer. The code of conduct contact actually has already been updated on the website version of the bylaws: https://openinfra.dev/legal/code-of-conduct It just didn't make it into the LibreOffice/Word format document. I ran 'wdiff' on the main bylaws text to catch any inconsistencies (and found, for example, that the website version didn't apply the bylaws changes for Vice Chairs late last year), but I didn't run it on the appendices, so I'll make sure to do that before we get to the board vote.
