Outreachy: Call for Funding, Mentors

Hi everyone, Quick update on the Outreachy <https://www.gnome.org/outreachy/> program, including a request for funding and volunteer mentors. For those of you who are not aware, Outreachy helps people from groups underrepresented in free and open source software get involved by matching interns with established mentors in the upstream community. There have been a record 30 intern applicants and 11 volunteer mentors for OpenStack this next cycle, which will take place Dec 7, 2015 - March 7, 2016. The OpenStack program coordinators could use a few more volunteer mentors, and there has been specific interest in Ceilometer, Cinder, Horizon, Murano, Neutron, Nova, Sahara and Zaqar. User Survey Live - Deadline Sept 25th

Hi everyone, As you know, the User Committee with the support of the Foundation staff has run a survey for OpenStack users prior to each Summit. This cycle, we’ve invested quite a bit of time cleaning up and improving the survey for operators and app developers, and we have more resources in place to improve reporting. We’re hoping to get as much participation as possible! Please help us promote it through your company and personal platforms. This is our best chance to aggregate user statistics and feedback for the community. The more users we have participating, the better we can leverage this information. OpenStack Foundation Tax Exempt Status

Hi everyone, I'm very happy to report that after a lengthy process with the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS), including an initial denial and an appeal, the OpenStack Foundation has been granted 501c6 tax exempt status. This is clear recognition of the positive impact that our Foundation is having on the cloud computing industry. While it may seem like a small administrative matter, the long term impact is very positive for the efforts of the Foundation and the industry, allowing us to devote more resources to ensuring the cloud revolution is truly open to everyone. We also hope this outcome for our Foundation benefits other open source organizations pursuing tax exempt status with the IRS now and in the future. Thank you to everyone in the OpenStack community and the greater open source world who supported us through the process. Jonathan

Long Answer: Geographical diversity is important now, and will be more important in the future. Inhibiting remote participation clearly limits the ability of directors, especially individually elected directors, to participate in one of our peak governing bodies from outside of a small geographical area. If we are unwilling outsource resolution of a simple issue in a mature technological field, I cannot imagine how we can succeed in meeting our diversity goals in areas where the solution space is much less mature and the effort required from us all will be orders of magnitude higher. Does the board have any limitations in mind when it comes to the charter we approved just last month? If we do, I suggest we publish them so they can be debated and endorsed. Next Summit Feedback

I forgot to mention this at the meeting, but I'm keen to see specific feedback from the summit attendees. The sched.org app for Vancouver didn't seem to incorporate this, although there seems to be an option for an "audience report" of some sort. Some sort of NPS-style functionality would be a good starting point and deeper analytics would be awesome. I'm not sure what work has gone into this previously, so would be happy understand that, and any work currently under way. Cheers Roland
