Hi everyone, This week we unveiled Kata Containers, the first project we are piloting under the Container Infrastructure strategic focus area. We wanted to let you know the launch and activities at KubeCon have been very positive and well received. Initially, the project has given the Foundation the opportunity to engage with new companies in the industry who have not historically supported OpenStack and help build bridges across the cloud native community. In the first 36 hours, we had more than 14,000 pageviews on katacontainer.io, nearly 100K impressions on Twitter, and lots of activity on WeChat. Hi Board, I’ve enjoyed my time working with you all on the Board, however due to other pressing commitments, I have decided to resign from my role on the OpenStack Board of Directors and other community activities effective immediately. I feel it is best for me to pass this role to Tristan, as he is better suited to fulfil the requirements of this position and to devote the required time and resources to fulfil this role. Hi everyone, As mentioned in the board meeting yesterday, a group has formed to help define the strategic focus areas for supporting additional new projects under OpenStack Foundation management. This Friday, October 13, at 9:00am CST (14:00 UTC) we will host a second meeting for those who have expressed interest in being part of this effort. OpenStack Deliverables Map -- Feedback Request

Hi everyone, One more follow up note from me today. In the joint leadership meeting we presented a map of OpenStack deliverables, which includes a new structure to categorize OpenStack projects. The goal is to better communicate “what is OpenStack?” by bucketing the projects according to functionality and simplifying the appearance of the project ecosystem. The map also hides many of the supporting projects, like libraries, to focus on the user-centric deliverables view. Stackers, Today you all released Pike, the latest release of OpenStack. That’s 16 software releases, every one on time, going back nearly seven years to October 21, 2010. That’s impressive! I think it speaks to what an amazing community we have and to all of your contributions. To everyone who contributed, whether through code, docs, ideas, feedback, financial support, or community organizing: thank you! OpenStack wouldn’t be a part of some of the greatest stories in the world, from the largest rail way, power company, and payment company in the world to the most innovative start ups, without your tireless efforts. With members in over 180 countries, clearly the world is counting on your work, and you continue to deliver :) I hope to see many of you at the PTG in Denver in a few days, and all of you in November at the OpenStack Summit in Sydney to celebrate everything this community has already accomplished, and plan for all the things we will accomplish together in the future. The event is organized by the OpenStack Foundation, but it’s not OpenStack specific. Discussions will cover many relevant open technologies. We’d love for you to help us make it a success to drive OpenStack and other tech in the right direction for Edge computing use cases. Board Initiatives: Unanswered Requirements Report

Good day, The world is always communicating and we want to respond appropriately. We believe this initiative is essential to ensuring we expand, succeed, and have a relevant product for a diverse group of interested people. Our initial proposal(s) will be what we believe will get us started down a path to achieving the strategy to respond and respond in a timely manner. While we have captured our initial thoughts and ideas our requirement was to have a conversation during the Boston Forum and here is what we expect to get out of this conversation: - Process/Workflow/System - This should address people and behaviors. It is not the golden solution but rather we hope to have a proposal and someone committed to writing it up and circulating it among the community. - Data Points to Measure - What can we actually measure that is relevant to revealing successes and failures; things we should continue to do, things we should stop doing, things we should try to do. - Item to Measure - Identify at least one requirement that can be used within the proposed process/workflow/system to learn from (target is to implement). - With implementation being the goal, the hope is that this will be seen as more than an exercise in futility. - Inspired Individuals - Those who will commit to participating for at least one Forum cycle and be available to provide feedback, learnings, ideas, questions, answers, etc; which can be used to improve the process/workflow/system. The April 11 OpenStack board meeting is cancelled

Directors, As there have been no pressing issues raised that would need to be addressed at the April board meeting and hearing of the great progress that the work efforts organized at our last F2F meeting, Lew, Jonathan and I have determined that it would be best to cancel the April 11 board meeting so that everyone may continue to focus on those efforts. We will also cancel the April 10 Gold member call. Our next board meeting will be the F2F meeting at Boston Summit. Board Initiatives: Adjacent Technologies team report

The adjacent technologies team has discussed how best to engage and collaborate with adjacent communities and integrate adjacent technologies in an effective and proactive manner. We have focused on addressing the gap between OpenStack and the Container communities and have identified a few key areas and activities to drive that we believe will progress this area. These efforts have been kick-started by the foundation team who have established an OpenStack presence at for instance Dockercon to build community awareness and collaboration. There will further be significant coverage of container technologies at the Boston Summit including; Keynotes on Tuesday addressing adjacent communities and containers, the container day for community collaboration, and no less than 70 talks at the summit individually referring to container technology. In parallel there is work ongoing to establish stronger collaboration across communities including; - CI integration of OpenStack as a cloud provider for Kubernetes - Modularization of OpenStack services for re-use in container based solutions, eg. Cinder, keystone, Manila & Ironic services - Ongoing development of scenarios running Kubernetes on OpenStack and OpenStack, as a control plane or as services, in containers These efforts intend to reduce the barriers between communities to both promote and ease cross community development and engagement. We intend to schedule a SuperUser TV interview on the topic at the summit where dims and hodgepodge will be provided an opportunity to share more information around these efforts through the media channel. Further steps include: - Developing an info-graphic that promotes understanding of how OpenStack and the container ecosystem work together and provide value. Positioning the application of each technology in conjunction with the other and highlighting the values provided for ease of understanding. Demystifying BM/VM/Container technologies for easier understanding. - Try to further develop methods of attracting the container community to collaborate, potentially lowering barriers for event participation etc. - Continue to review messaging and communications through openstack.org among other avenues Regards, The adjacent technologies team

The purpose of these recommendations is to use our best initial ideas for growing community members into leaders or (leveling people up). There may be more recommendations in the future. Demystifying the Review Process Requests for Foundation Staff: · Fund and organize three or four lightning reviews in a recorded fashion in 5-10 minute slots at Boston · Fund and staff any PTL or core review activities that result in recorded sessions by community members found through TC activities · Provide adequate support and funding the for the stewardship working group, however, keep a hands-off approach Requests for the Technical Committee: · After OpenStack Summit recovery, start a conversation and support that conversation to offer PTLs and core reviewers the opportunity to participate in recorded sessions of the following: o How to do review backlog triage o How to properly review a patch submitted by a contributor o How to work on each specific project’s individual gating systems Regards, -steve

Board Members and Foundation Staff, I will be leaving AT&T on the 21st of March. I have a unique opportunity to join a startup in the Annapolis area, an opportunity that is impossible to pass up. Kandan Kathirvel will be taking my spot as the AT&T Board of Directors appointee. I've copied Kandan here. Kandan has been working for me as architect for the AT&T Integrated Cloud (AIC) and will be a helpful liaison to all our various implementations of OpenStack. Working with you all and the OpenStack community over the last almost 7 years.. has been a tremendously rewarding experience for me, especially given the context of OpenStack’s unprecedented growth and evolution .. since that time in 2010 when Jim Curry invited me to the first summit in Austin & also given the unprecedented context of SDN, NFV, Open Source and Domain 2.0 transformations at AT&T and in the Telco industry generally. User Survey update

So far, we have nearly 1,400 surveys and more than 550 deployments—that’s 40% more than our largest survey ever! As promised, we shared the PTL-submitted questions data that came in by Feb. 20 with PTLs prior to the Project Teams Gathering in Atlanta, to inform their conversations. We also extended the survey open period to ensure the largest possible community participation, and it closes tonight. I’m excited to dig into the data with the User Survey working group. Many thanks to this team for QA testing before the survey was released, and for the upcoming tasks of comment analysis, data analysis and report draft review. OpenStack Ocata launches tomorrow—key features & resources for you

With this, OpenStack provides unique value as an integration engine for containers, VMs and bare metal on a single network. The 15th release of OpenStack was a shorter, stabilization cycle (four months vs. six months) as we adjust to the new PTG/Forum model. A key trend we highlighted in press and analyst briefings for the Ocata release was cost savings for OpenStack private cloud users, especially as we saw Snap Inc.’s IPO filing highlight the cost of GCE & AWS public cloud at scale. OpenStack users are becoming more sophisticated in allocating workloads across public and private clouds to take advantage of cost savings, performance gains and compliance. In fact, 72% of OpenStack users cite cost savings as their number one business driver, according to the latest User Survey. We’re also seeing a trend around managed services and specifically remotely managed private clouds, meaning enterprises do not need to employ large technical teams to run an OpenStack environment. Two examples of OpenStack users experiencing cost savings are Snapdeal <http://www.financialexpress.com/industry/snapdeals-hybrid-cloud-snapdeal-re…> and Pubmatic <http://www.computerworlduk.com/cloud-computing/pubmatic-cloud-chief-on-his-…>. In briefings, we fielded many questions about OpenStack's support for container-based application frameworks and deployment tools. Container projects Kolla (containerized OpenStack services), Kuryr (bridging container networking and storage with OpenStack) and Zun (container management) saw the most contributor growth during the Ocata release cycle. Hi everyone, Today we published the OpenStack Foundation 2016 Annual Report: https://www.openstack.org/assets/reports/OpenStack-2016-Annual-Report-final… Thank you to all of the community members who contributed to the report, and to Heidi Joy for putting it together. The report includes key stats, as well as updates from the Board of Directors, Foundation staff, Technical Committee, Board Committees and Working Groups. We had a busy year in 2016, and it’s great to see our collective efforts documented. 2016 was a big year for OpenStack. We had our most substantial software releases, our best-attended Summits, our broadest set of global OpenStack Days, reached our largest footprint of public cloud providers, and learned about bigger deployments and projects using OpenStack. We saw organizations as varied as AT&T, Volkswagen Group, China Mobile, Banco Santander, and Cambridge University give keynote presentations about driving innovation with the software our community develops. And we saw new companies invest in our community, especially from China and the telecom sector. We started to see the power of the “one platform” concept with virtualization, bare metal and containers working together to run versatile workloads. From the OpenStack and Kubernetes demos in Austin to the OpenStack and OPNFV telecom demo in Barcelona, we saw how collaboration and technology integrations deliver practical value. But 2016 was also a year of changes in the industry and in our community, whether it be emerging technologies or shifts in the ecosystem. As we look forward to 2017, more change is on the horizon and collaboration within our community and beyond is more important than ever. The way we react and adapt in this period of change will have a huge impact on the role OpenStack plays in the future of IT. With a strong, diverse community and clear mission, there’s nothing we can’t achieve together. Today we kick off 2017 with the first Board meeting, in which we'll seat new members from the recent election. We look forward to supporting and working closely with all of you this year! With these changes, they notified us of their decision to resign their Platinum Membership, which results in an opening this year. At the upcoming Board meeting on Tuesday Jan 24th, we’d like to discuss the timeline for considering new Platinum Member applications. The Platinum Member Agreement (http://www.openstack.org/legal/platinum-member-policy/) covers the process for new Platinum Members to be elected in broad terms in Section 4. The two doors circled in green on the attached screenshot show you which doors will be open for the Board Meeting participants tomorrow. Doors will open at 7:30am. I’ve also attached the complete Board Map for a birds eye view. The CCIB main entrances are a little confusing because they are loaded on the backside which is the beach-side of the building (not the street side where one would normally think to enter). Updates to Code of Conduct

Hi everyone, There is strong interest from the community to update the OpenStack Code of Conduct. The goals are to encourage diversity, provide more explicit guidance around what is acceptable (or not acceptable) behavior, and clarify the reporting and enforcement process. We need the Board to approve changes to the code of conduct since it is referenced in the Foundation bylaws. You can find an updated version in the google doc below, which is the result of multiple contributors from the Diversity Working Group and community at large. It was also circulated on the Foundation mailing list last week for feedback. Follow up: OpenStack UX Board Presentation

Board, I wanted to thank you for allowing the OpenStack UX team present at the board meeting. Priorities before the Barcelona Summit The focus of the OpenStack UX before Barcelona will be to collect deeper information on our customers including app developers and cloud operators. This will be at the expense of UX (GUI) design, but the immediate need is to generate a deeper understanding of cloud users. Here are our research priorities before the Barcelona Summit: Documentation As you now, this has been a pain point for cloud operators, app developers, etc. The goal is to understand information needs and will extend beyond documentation to other potential solutions. At this point, we’re really focused on identifying the specific issues that our customers are experiencing. Of the studies, this will likely be our biggest effort because of the complexity of the research. Application Developer recruitment survey The goal of this survey is to create a pool of app developers that are willing to participate in research on behalf on the community. This group of personas can be difficult to recruit because they may not participate in community activities, such as the summits, and thus are not available through the normal channels. Application Developer survey The goal of this survey is to collect deeper, more focused data about app developers that is currently not being provided by the sem-annual survey. To be fair, the semi-annual user survey would take hours to complete if every working group or project was able to add questions. Project Quotas Based on an informal survey, quotas were identified by roughly ten companies as a major pain point for operators; presumably because they can be difficult to manage at scale, i.e. thousands of projects. The intent of this study Persona validation Survey to validate the proposed personas. OpenStackClient usability The goal is to continue to study the OpenStackClient because of it’s potential to impact the experience associated with OpenStackClient from cloud operators to app developers. API We’re still working with the API working group to understand their needs. OpenStack Deployment/Configuration We’re working with the team at OSIC to understand how to collect baseline information on the insulating experience. I’m still chatting with the indiviudal project teams and work groups to develop the study plans, i.e. usability or survey, but all have expressed interest in collaborating on user research. Also, some of these efforts will occur in parallel. This is a very aggressive schedule, so it hard to estimate whether we will be able to complete all of these research activities. Project Team Gathering update

Hi everyone Following up on our discussion at the last Board meeting, I wanted to let you know that we have begun planning to introduce the new "Project Team Gathering" events in 2017, to be held in between the main "Summit" events. The "Project Team Gathering" (PTG) is the name we're using for these smaller, focused events where the project teams work on the implementation details for an upcoming release. There is a design summit session taking place next Tuesday at 4:40 pm to further discuss the format and timing for the first Project Team Gathering, which we’re tentatively targeting for February 2017. A couple of updates and points to clarify our conversation from the last board meeting: - Regarding the impact to the release cycle, in the Board meeting we had talked about the possibility of Ocata being a shorter, stabilization-focused release. However, based on the timing of Newton release and the initial Project Team Gathering, we expect Ocata to be a normal release cycle length - I think there is some confusion about exactly which design summit sessions are being broken out into a separate "PTG" event. We will not be moving ALL of the "design summit" work to the PTG. The idea is to make more space at the Summit for strategic planning conversations and user <-> developer interactions (the "what?"), leaving the project-specific implementation discussions to the Project Team Gatherings (the "how?"). The new Project Team Gathering would essentially replace the piecemeal mid-cycle events as a chance for those neck-deep in code to have productive working space. We still expect many key developers will attend the the community-wide Summit events. I would like to invite you to stop by for breakfast, coffee, and listen in to the Women of OpenStack working session on Tuesday, April 26, from 7am-8:45am. It is not a problem if you can't stay for the entire session, you can drop in for a few minutes if you have time on your schedule. We started this tradition at the Paris Summit and it has grown from 35 attendees to over a 100 attendees in Tokyo. The goal of the session is to hear from women in the community, make connections, and find ways to support each other by identifying issues we want to address between summits. One of the key accomplishments for this summit is the creation of a peer mentoring program sponsored by the Women of OpenStack that we are kicking off in Austin. The agenda will focus on 3 lightning talk speakers followed by small group discussion. Dear OpenStack Board and TCs, OpenStack has become a leader in supporting diversity in open source and Austin will be an exciting conference for this. The Women of OpenStack (WOS) working with the OpenStack Foundation are planning a number of great programs at this year's OpenStack Summit in Austin. We have worked with the National Center for Women and IT Research (NCWIT) a National Science Foundation funded organization to create a workshop and a panel on "The Diversity of Innovation". We have leaders In the OpenStack community like Imad Sousou, Mike Muehl and Dorian Naveh on the panel. Call to action: We would like to invite leaders on the board and the TC community to attend the workshop "Champions for Change" on Tuesday at lunch time and the panel the same day on "Diversity for Innovation". Both are aimed at leaders in the community to help them be champions and to role model inclusive leadership. Details of the workshop are below. Hello Board members! I'm cross posting a recent conversation with the TC into the Board ML, in case any of you didn't catch it on the -dev list. If you're interested in leadership training, please write me, respond here, or ping me on IRC (gothicmindfood). Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------ Hello Stackers, This is the continuation of an ongoing conversation within the TC about encouraging the growth of leadership skills within the community that began just after the Mitaka summit last year[1]. After being asked by lifeless to do a bit of research and discussing needs/wants re: leadership directly with TC members, I made some suggestions on an etherpad[2], and was then asked to go find out about funding possibilities. tl;dr - If you're a member of the TC or the Board and would like to attend Leadership Training at ZingTrain in Ann Arbor, please get back to me ASAP with your contact info and preferred timing/dates for this two-day training - also, please let me know whether April 20/21 (or April 21/22) would specifically work for you or not. Longer version: Mark Collier and the Foundation have graciously offered to cover the costs of training for a two-day session at ZingTrain in Ann Arbor - this includes the cost of breakfast/lunch for two days as well as two full working-days of seminars. Attendees would be responsible for their own travel, lodging, and incidental expenses beyond that (hopefully picked up by your employer who sees this as an amazing opportunity for your career growth). Currently, I've heard the week before the Austin Summit suggested by more than one person coming in from out of the country as preferred dates, but we've not committed to anything yet, so here might be a great time and place to hash that out among interested parties. ZingTrain has suggested a cap of ~20 people on the course, but that's not totally firm, so it's possible to add more if more are interested, or we could hold two separate two-day sessions to accommodate overflow. My ideal mix of people include those who are really excited by the idea of training, and those who are are seriously skeptical of any leadership training at all. In fact, if you've been to leadership training before and have found it to be terrible and awful, I think your input would be most valuable on this one. My summary of reasoning behind the 'why' of ZingTrain can be found on the etherpad I already mentioned[2]. Also, did I mention, the food will be amazing? It will be[3]. Some complications: the week before the Newton Summit there will be a set of incoming TC members (elected in early April) and likely some TC members who will be outgoing. Some possible solutions: we can certainly push back training til post-Summit when we can have a set of the 'new' TC, or we can sign up anyone interested currently, and allow a limited number of newly elected folks who are interested sign on as the election is finished. I certainly welcome any thoughts on that. A note about starting out with the TC/Board for training: this initiative began as a set of conversations about leadership as a whole in the entire OpenStack community, so the intent with limiting to TC/Board here is not exclusion, merely finding the right place to start. My proposal with the TC begins with them, because the leadership conversation within OpenStack began with them, and the goals of training are really to help them talk about defining the issue/problem collectively, within a space designed to help people do that.
