OIF bylaws text changes for gender neutrality

Hi all, In the March OIF board meeting, the Diversity & Inclusion working group proposed some minor changes to the bylaws to use more gender-neutral language. We've completed legal review on the changes, so we're ready for broader community review and feedback now, and then will plan for the OIF board to vote on the changes in the next board meeting in December. I've attached a PDF with a redline markup of the changes, all comments are welcome. The changes are relatively simple: a) "Chairman" changes to "Chair" throughout the document. b) Consistently uses they/their as the gender-neutral 3rd person singular pronoun. This replaces all instances of he/his, and all cases where we previously had incomplete gender neutrality with "his or hers", "he or she", and other variations that explicitly listed two genders. While this use of they/their as 3rd person singular isn't universal, it is very common in modern usage. And, the bylaws already have an explicit statement that any pronouns should be read as singular/plural as needed: "6.7 _Pronouns._ All pronouns used in these Bylaws shall be deemed to refer to the masculine, feminine or neuter, singular or plural, as the identity of the person or persons may require." The updates change a few words in protected sections of the bylaws, so after the board vote, we'll need independent votes from the OpenStack Technical Committee and Platinum Members, and will include these changes in the annual Gold Member and Individual Member votes (for Gold and Individual Directors). So, it'll probably be mid- to late-January before the changes are fully reviewed and approved. Thanks, Allison

Associate Membership class

Dear Board members, As previously discussed, during the board meeting next week I will propose the creation of a new class of members called "Associate members". Here is a short description of that new class: ======================================================================= Associate member class The Associate member class is an Open Infrastructure Foundation (“the Foundation”) member class that does not have a vote for a member of the Board of Directors to represent it, or a vote on any other matter. It was created on XXX by a resolution of the Foundation Board of Directors, under the provision of section 2.1 of the Foundation bylaws. The Associate class is open to two types of organizations: non-profit organizations sustaining open infrastructure projects, and notable academic and public research institutions making extensive use of open infrastructure projects. The Executive Director of the Foundation has authority to admit and terminate members of the Associate Class. The Associate class does not require any membership fee. Members of the Associate class support the Foundation mission by associating their organization name with it and allowing the Foundation to promote that association. For non-profit organizations sustaining open infrastructure projects, the Foundation in return may reciprocate through membership in equivalent affiliate membership programs, engage in co-marketing opportunities or sharing events. Rationale: The Open Infrastructure Foundation mission is to develop, support, protect, and promote open infrastructure software projects (open source solutions to build infrastructure for further innovation). Integration between those projects has been identified as a key issue hindering further adoption of those solutions. While the Foundation directly supports and promotes a number of projects, its mission goes beyond the projects it directly hosts. We currently don’t have any program allowing us to formally engage with non-profit organizations sustaining open infrastructure projects, and help us better collaborate around events, promotion, and cross-community discussions. bylaws change proposed for multiple Vice Chairs

Hi everyone, In the January 26th board meeting, we discussed the process for electing multiple individuals to the role of Vice Chair, and noted that a small bylaws change would be necessary to make this possible. After a few rounds of refinement and legal review, here's the proposed update to the bylaws, allowing more than one Vice Chair. I've attached it as plain text, and as a PDF showing the differences in the update. The sentence about the Vice Chairs standing in for the Chairman mentions the "order" of the Vice Chairs. The intention here is that the Chairman and the Vice Chairs will set a rotation schedule, so at any point in the year everyone knows which Vice Chair is "on call" to stand in for the Chairman. This can be as simple as alternating months (for example, Alice is on call in March, Bob is on call in April, Alice is on call again in May, etc...), but leaving the schedule up to the Chairman and Vice Chairs gives us flexibility to easily change it if one of the Vice Chairs needs to swap out a month for a family holiday, or busy month at work, or whatever might come up. The alternation allows a fair division of work between the Vice Chairs. This proposed bylaws change will be up for discussion and vote in the upcoming board meeting on March 2nd. Thanks, Allison

2020 OpenInfra Foundation Annual Report Now Available

Hi everyone, The Foundation’s 2020 annual report is now available. The Open Infrastructure community had a productive and successful year in spite of the unprecedented global challenges in 2020. Together with the 60+ organizations who joined the launch of the Open Infrastructure Foundation and over 110,000 community members, we are starting the next decade of open infrastructure tackling challenges including hardware diversification, deployment diversification, government regulations like data sovereignty, and the availability of more open source than ever. Each community member, working group, SIG, and contributor was instrumental in continuing to support the Open Infrastructure Foundation's mission: building open source communities that write software to run in production. The 2020 Annual Report was published today highlighting the achievements across the community and the goals for the year ahead. Let’s break down some of the highlights of last year: • The OpenStack Foundation took the next step in its ongoing evolution by becoming the Open Infrastructure Foundation to support open infrastructure for a market estimated at $20 billion USD. • Over 60 global organizations joined in establishing the Open Infrastructure Foundation to build the next decade of infrastructure for AI, 5G and edge computing, including 9 Platinum Members: Ant Group, AT&T, Ericsson, Facebook, FiberHome, Huawei, Red Hat, Wind River and Tencent. • OpenStack, one of the top three most active open source projects with 15 million cores in production, marked its 10th anniversary in July 2020. • The OpenInfra Foundation announced its support for the Magma project, confirmed OpenInfra Labs as its newest pilot project and StarlingX as a top-level Open Infrastructure project. • The OpenInfra community became more accessible internationally through the first virtual Open Infrastructure Summit that gathered 10,000 attendees from 120+ different countries to discuss more than 30 open source projects. [board][interop] Is it time to revisit: Trademarks, Branding, and Interoperability?

Greetings everyone! Over the past few weeks I’ve been in a number of discussions regarding some of our most very fun topics. Branding, Trademarks, and Interoperability. I think this is a good time to revisit these topics because of the conversion from the OpenStack Foundation to the Open Infrastructure Foundation. The further broadening of the larger community represents both an opportunity and a checkpoint in which we should likely ask ourselves some questions to help guide our future path. I think what has made some of these discussions difficult in the past is because we intertwined the topics. To meet the perceived needs of the past, we ended up building and encoding specific models and concepts when the only project was OpenStack. We were trying to foster and develop an expansive ecosystem at that time. Then, it likely seemed logical to encode this as part of the bylaws. Except those processes have left us with something that is difficult to amend, change, or adapt moving forward. And even that seems like a daunting issue in itself, before we consider that non-openstack projects have different needs. This does not mean we can not nor should not ask ourselves what is important. We must identify where we want to see things in the future for such programs. If we don’t identify these things, then we can not measure future success nor possibly identify new needs. Besides, who else is better suited to lead projects to become more agile and responsive to emergent needs if not the board itself? So with those thoughts in mind, I would like for us to all mentally take a step back and try to answer some basic questions to help frame future discussion. * Where do we see the value in the trademark and associated branding? What is important? What is less important? * How do we see branding and trademarks evolving now that the foundation scope has expanded? * What is the desired end goal of trademark and branding programs? Are there multiple specific end goals? And then there is the topic of interoperability. Looking forward it seems like there is more than one level of interoperability that needs to be thought of and cared about. * At what level should we, the board, encourage cross-community/cross-project/product/service interoperability? * What is the end goal of interoperability in our evolved scope? * Is the board the right level at which to have the discussions and ultimately the technical management of the fine details regarding interoperability? I’m posing the last question for a very important reason. Our scope has widened. We have zoomed out. The bigger picture is our focus as the board. The lower level details of any project’s interoperability do require fine details and specific context. To unfortunately use another photography analogy, the repeated zoom in and zoom out does not help us keep our focus on the bigger picture. As a board, we need to track the picture consistently and constantly, which is the only way we can best frame our discussions and resulting outcomes. I hope this email brings about discussion on these topics. Not necessarily a discussion of how or what, but more of a discussion of means to unlock and enable. Thanks, -Julia

Hi everyone, Ahead of this week’s board of directors meeting, I wanted to share some of the positive news we received out of the OpenStack Ussuri release last month. The OpenStack Foundation held two press conferences (one for US / EMEA media and one for APAC media) as well as a few separate 1:1 briefings. We were able to reach over 50 members of the global media resulting in over 40 articles covering the release and other OSF updates. PTG happening next week and OpenDev preview

Hello everyone, We wanted to send a reminder that the PTG is happening virtually next week, June 1-5. As you know, the PTG plays an integral part in developing the next release of OpenStack, as well as the software for other OSF projects and we’re very excited to hold this event virtually for the first time. Not only will we be bringing our community together during this pandemic, we will also be able to include participants who might not have been able to travel to the event in the past. Considering this will be our first virtual event, there will likely be hiccups and we appreciate your patience as we work through them. The good news with running into hiccups is that we’ll learn from them and will continue to learn how to throw great virtual events (and we have a few more lined up). Shortly after the PTG, starting June 29, we will be holding a series of virtual OpenDev events where developers and users will get together to share best practices, identify gaps and advance the state of open infrastructure. These events will cover different topics and will be very interactive, with the chance to talk to some of the biggest open infrastructure users and contributors in the world. Looking for volunteers to lead Interoperability working group

Hi, newly-elected and returning board members, During the last meeting, Alan called for new volunteers to join board committees like the Compensation committee or the Finance committee. While not strictly a committee, the Interoperability working group (formerly known as DefCore committee) is a OSF board working group that leads the definition of new versions of our Interoperability guidelines, which are used to grant the rights to use various trademarks such as "OpenStack-Powered platform". The group was previously led by Egle Sigler and Mark Voelker, who as of 2020 are no longer part of the board. Its main task is to get consensus on which APIs are necessary to be offered and which sections of code are necessary to be run to call your deployment "an OpenStack cloud". Technically, that translates into the definition of a set of Tempest tests matching the required API calls, so that products and deployments can assert the trademark through a suite of tools called RefStack. This work is critical in driving interoperability between OpenStack deployments, which is an essential benefit of using OpenStack software in hybrid usage scenarios. Representing all facets of our community, the Board is uniquely positioned to define what that consensus looks like and evolve it over time. Who is interested in participating in that workgroup ? I'm available to answer any question you may have about the process, and for questions I don't have the answer to, I copied Egle on this email so that she can bring additional context if needed. 2019 OSF Annual Report Now Available

The OSF community had a productive year, merging 58k code changes to produce open source infrastructure software like Airship, Kata Containers, StarlingX, and Zuul, along with the third most active OSS project in the world, OpenStack. With 100,000 members and millions more visiting OSF websites in 2019 to get involved, the community made huge strides in addressing the 7.7B market for OpenStack and more than $12B combined OpenStack & Containers markets in the future. Each individual member, working group, SIG, and contributor was instrumental in continuing to support the OSF mission: helping people build and operate open infrastructure. The OSF 2019 Annual Report <https://www.openstack.org/foundation/2019-openstack-foundation-annual-report>was published today highlighting the achievements across the community and the goals for the year ahead. Let’s break down some of the highlights of last year: The OSF confirmed three new open infrastructure projects to complement OpenStack in powering the world’s open infrastructure; OpenStack is one of the top three most active open source projects in number of changes, and is projected to be a $7.7 billion USD market by 2023; Some of the world’s largest brands—AT&T, Baidu, Blizzard Entertainment, BMW, China UnionPay, Walmart, and Volvo among others—shared their open source infrastructure use cases and learnings; Upstream contributors continued to prioritize cross-project integration with open source projects including Ceph, Kubernetes, Ansible, and Tungsten Fabric. New contributors were on-boarded through multiple internship and mentoring programs as well as OpenStack Upstream Institute, which was held in seven countries last year! The OSF would like to extend a huge thanks to the global community for all of the work that went into 2019 and is continuing in 2020 to help people build and operate open source infrastructure. Upcoming Interop guideline and the future of OpenStack Interop Guidelines

Foundation Board, Thank you for approving the latest interop guideline during the last board meeting. As I mentioned during the last board meeting, we are going to start scoring the next guideline to be approved during the November board meeting and we are looking for volunteers to join the Interop Working Group. The current process for creating the next guideline requires talking to the project PTLs and other members of the community to determine if there are any significant changes to the projects, determining which tempest tests are associated with these changes, and scoring the changes based on interop core criteria [1]. After the scoring is complete, we discuss the results in an IRC meeting and submit patches for updating the guidelines. If you can help and would like to learn more about the process, please let me know! During Shanghai board meeting I would like to have a discussion with the board about the future of the interop program. With help from the community and some very dedicated people that included Chris Hoge (secretary of Interop WG, OpenStack Foundation) and Mark Voelker (co-chair of Interop WG, VMware) I have co-chaired Interop Working Group for almost 5 years. During this time the Interop guidelines have become stable, with fewer and fewer changes made in each new guideline. I think that if the board wants to continue with the guidelines as-is, with twice a year updates (or more if needed), we will need new volunteers to co-chair Interop WG and help drive the program. Another option would be to simplify the trademark program so that it doesn’t require so many volunteer hours. If it relied more on contractual assertions and less on formal technical checks requiring updated guidelines, it could be directly handled by the foundation. In addition to the guideline maintenance and updates, there is the work involved in running and maintaining RefStack. RefStack is used to validate and submit the results, and needs constant maintenance and updates as well. A more contractual interop program would not require an overhead of maintaining an additional project. I believe that Interop guidelines are instrumental in maintaining OpenStack interoperability, however, I also believe that we need to make the program easy to maintain and abide by. As such, I would like to hand over the program as-is to new volunteers from the board, or simplify the program down to a contract that can be directly managed by the foundation.. After this next guideline, the board will need to decide what path the interop guidelines should take. Current process is strict and requires a lot of volunteer hours. While the program was being created and growing, we had a lot of community involvement. Once the guidelines became stable, we had less and less participation. As of last week, Chris Hoge, a key member of the Interop Working Group, no longer works for the Foundation and we will no longer be able to count on him doing a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to guideline changes. Passing the Red Hat baton to Daniel Becker

Hi all Some months ago I transitioned within Red Hat from a management role back to an individual contributor role and lately I'm not so directly involved with Red Hat's day-to-day OpenStack operations. These past years on the board have been quite a ride, and I'm very grateful for the opportunity to work with you all. I remain a big advocate of the OpenStack, and so I'm very happy to be passing the baton as Red Hat's representative on the board to my good friend and close colleague, Daniel Becker. As director of our OpenStack engineering organization, Daniel is obviously very close to Red Hat's OpenStack concerns, and has a particular interest in the health of the developer community since he is directly responsible for the majority of Red Hat's contributors. Director Diversity - Item for Board meeting

Hi everyone, One of our 2019 directors, Sean McGinnis, recently switched employment to Dell. As most of you know, the Bylaws have a clause in Article 4.17(a) that ensures diversity of representation by limiting the number of directors that can be affiliated with a single corporate entity to two (the “Director Diversity Requirement”). We already had two directors from Dell on the Board (Arkady Kanevsky and Prakash Ramchandran), so Sean’s new affiliation brings that total over the limit. Article 4.17(d) of the Bylaws states “If a director who is an individual becomes Affiliated during his or her term and such Affiliation violates the Director Diversity Requirement, such individual shall resign as a director.” However, 4.17(e) says "A violation of the Director Diversity Requirement may be waived by a vote of two thirds of the Board of Directors (not including the directors who are Affiliated).” Sean has requested that the Board vote on a motion to waive the violation under 4.17(e). In the case of this Board vote, Arkady, Prakash and Sean would abstain from voting and the remaining directors could vote to waive or not waive the violation for the remainder of the 2019 term. Alan will add this item to the agenda, so I wanted to send out some brief background on the issue and the relevant sections from the Bylaws ahead of the meeting. Dear Board Directors, I want to bid farewell to you all and inform you that I'm officially transitioning Huawei's Board Director seat to Fred Li, cc'ed here, starting 8/1/2019. Fred has lead Huawei's OpenStack developer team, and been a significant contributor in growing the Open Source developer community in China for the last ~4 years (including contributing to 3 OpenStack/OpenInfra China Day events, and 9 Bug-Smash events). I'm sure Fred will do an awesome job being part of the OpenStack Foundation Board. I want to thank you for all of your support and friendship for the last 3+ years. Hi everyone, Hopefully you have seen that the Open Infrastructure Summit and Project Teams Gathering (PTG) is heading to Shanghai in November! We are excited to take the Summit to mainland China for the first time, and appreciate your organization’s support to make it a great week! In order to create a successful event, we wanted to share some of the changes we have incorporated: The CFP (which is currently open until July 2nd) is accepting sessions in both English and Chinese. Onsite, sessions will be presented in English and Mandarin. Simultaneous interpretation will be available for the keynotes; breakout session interpretation may be available pending submitted content. There are two registration options available - one in USD and one in RMB. Attendees have the ability to purchase tickets in the currency they prefer and receive an e-fapiao (chinese tax) receipt with RMB purchases. Suggest a candidate theme to the TC?

OpenStack Board Directors, At the Denver Leadership meeting[1], the TC included an update on the OpenStack-wide Goals or 'themes'. These themes are one or two goals that all the projects aim to complete during the release. Such goals aim to achieve visible common changes. I was happy to see the progress and At the meeting, the TC stated that it would be acceptable for the OpenStack Board to submit a suggested goal. This doesn't mean that the TC would automatically include it, but that it would then go through the TC process outlined on the TC goals page[2] for process and approval. Would it be productive for the OpenStack Board to discuss, agree upon and submit a candidate goal for some future release? I can think of two or three ideas that would perhaps be pertinent ideas to come from the board. I'm pinging you for your feedback and insight. Is there a 'theme goal' that the board should consider submitting? Do you think this would be a valuable board email discussion over the next couple months? OpenStack Foundation & Export / EAR

The OpenStack Foundation has received inquiries regarding concerns with a member subject to an Entity List Ruling.[1] While statements in the Executive Order prompting the listing used language granting a broader scope of authority, the Huawei Entity List ruling was specifically scoped to activities and transactions subject to the Export Administration Regulation (EAR). Open source encryption software source code was reclassified by the US Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) effective September 20, 2016 as "publicly available" and no longer “subject to the EAR.”[2] Each open source project is still required to send a notice of the URL to BIS and NSA to satisfy the "publicly available" notice requirement in the EAR at 15 CFR § 742.15(b). The OpenStack Foundation (OSF) continues to work with our projects to ensure their notices are up to date and are maintained in the future.[3] Open source software, collaboration on open source code, attending telephonic or in person meetings, participating in training and providing membership or sponsorship funds are all activities which are not subject to the EAR and therefore should have no impact on our communities. Bylaws change proposed at next week's OpenStack board meeting to support Open Infrastructure project confirmation

As the OpenStack Foundation embraces new areas of strategic focus and as the associated Open Infrastructure projects mature, the OpenStack board desires to do its part in helping the projects thrive and grow. A key step in project advancement is the project confirmation by the Board. Confirmation will enable the Foundation to apply additional Foundation resources towards that project. In support of this process, the board at its last meeting, approved the OSF Project Confirmation Guidelines[1]. As the Guidelines point out, many factors go into the board's decisions. To ensure that the board has the mechanisms needed to be as sensitive as possible to the needs and feelings for those invested in the projects, the board will further discuss a motion to amend bylaws section 4.16 as follows: (changed text in italics). 4.16 Open Meetings and Records. Except as necessary to protect attorney-client privilege, sensitive personnel information, discuss the candidacy of potential Gold Member and Platinum Members, and discuss the review and approval of Open Infrastructure Projects, the Board of Directors shall: (i) permit observation of its meetings by Members via remote teleconference or other electronic means, and (ii) publish the Board of Directors minutes and make available to any Member on request other information and records of the Foundation as required by Delaware Corporate Law. If, during confirmation discussions, a project lead or Director feels that there is sensitive information that needs to be protected this amendment provides a mechanism for such discussion. Call to develop the confirmation guidelines

Please respond by November 30. Directors, thank you for your leadership at this week's board and joint leadership meetings. The resolutions we passed will be a pivotal point for our community for years to come. Now, as a board, we have some additional work to undertake to define guidelines that we as a board will use to help confirm pilot projects. I would like to launch a new board work effort to define guidelines the board can use to fulfill our confirmation responsibilities as part of the strategic project process. These guidelines will be a key tool for us to ensure that we and the OpenStack Foundation will be in a proper position to help these projects grow, thrive and succeed as an open source community driven technology. Hi everyone, We’ve been working on Bylaws changes and have a draft that’s several revisions in to review today. This is not ready to vote on today. We’d like to vote on it at the Board meeting in Berlin. Today, I’d like to walk through the changes with everyone, see if there’s anything that needs more refinement and be ready to share the proposed amendments with the whole community. There are 3 basic categories of changes in this draft: 1) changes to support additional projects; 2) changes requested by the Technical Committee; and 3) changes to remove unnecessary corporate startup provisions in the original bylaws. OpenStack 'Rocky' Press Coverage Highlights

Hello, Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Rocky release! It was a great milestone for the community, and we received positive press coverage last week. During the Rocky cycle, we highlighted improvements to Ironic, which enable the OpenStack ecosystem to offer bare metal, virtual machines and containers in one platform, and also positions OpenStack bare metal clouds as a strong underlying infrastructure option for Kubernetes. In terms of container support, another milestone we achieved during the Rocky cycle was getting Magnum certified as a Kubernetes installer. We also highlighted work to improve upgrades, as well as emerging projects including Cyborg (lifecycle management for hardware accelerators), Qinling (serverless functions for OpenStack clouds) and Masakari (HA). We were also able to include a strong user quote in the press release: "At Oath, OpenStack manages hundreds of thousands of bare metal compute resources in our data centers. Help Needed - User Survey Deadline

Hi everyone, I wanted to make sure that everyone knows that the 2018 OpenStack User Survey is only open for a few more days. It’s incredibly important that your teams and customers participate in this survey to not only share feedback with the development community, but also share deployment information that gives us a better picture around OpenStack adoption. Another valuable use for the data is in educating analysts. For example, a Gartner report was just published with some unflattering commentary and data around OpenStack, and we expect this year’s user survey data to be very valuable in refuting some of the claims. In short, The User Survey is the opportunity to arm your teams, the community, and analysts with data around OpenStack momentum and adoption. The deadline is next Tuesday, August 21 at 11:59pm PT. OpenStack Summit Berlin Agenda Preview

Hi everyone, The Berlin Summit agenda goes live next week, but I wanted to share an agenda preview of several users who are already secured to share their stories around infrastructure use cases including AI, Edge Computing, CI/CD and even a workshop around OpenStack Upgrades. Stay tuned for next week when the full agenda goes live! BMW will discuss the CI requirements for software projects at BMW like autonomous driving and how they use Zuul to develop software at scale. Oerlikon, a textile manufacturing company based in Switzerland, will detail its OpenStack-based edge computing architecture and how they make 365,000 bobbins per day, each bobbin laden with enough yarn to go from the earth to the moon and back. The technology team from Ocado, the world’s largest online-only supermarket based in the UK, will share how it relies on OpenStack for minimal downtime in powering its robot-managed warehouses. Metronom, the IT supplier for Metro AG, a wholesale business operating in 25 countries, will share its experience with OpenStack and how open source has had an influence on its internal culture. Oath upgraded its OpenStack environment from Juno to Ocata with almost zero impact on its customers. At the Berlin Summit, the Oath team will lead an upgrades workshop to address one of the most common challenges shared by OpenStack operators. The OpenStack Foundation will provide an update on its strategy as well as sessions on the projects hosted by the OSF—Airship, Kata Containers, OpenStack, StarlingX and Zuul. Additional sessions will emphasize numerous open source technologies relevant to infrastructure operators, including Ansible, Ceph, Docker, Envoy, Istio, Kata Containers, Kubernetes, ONAP, OPNFV, Spinnaker, Tungsten Fabric and many more. OpenLab Cross-community Impact

Hi everyone, I know we have sent out quite a bit of information over the past few days with the OpenStack Summit and other updates recently. Additionally there are plenty of meetings we all attend. I just want to take time to point to something very significant in my opinion and again give big thanks to Chris, Dims, Liusheng, Chenrui, Zhuli, Joe (gophercloud), and anyone else contributing to OpenLab. A member of the release team working on the testing infrastructure for Kubernetes did a shoutout to the team for the following: (AishSundar) Shoutout to @dims and OpenStack team for quickly getting their 1.11 Conformance results piped to CI runs and contributing results to Conformance dashboard ! https://k8s-testgrid.appspot.com/sig-release-1.11-all#Conformance%20-%20Ope… Here is why this is significant and those working on this who I previously mentioned should get recognition: (hogepodge) OpenStack and GCE are the first two clouds that will release block on conformance testing failures. Thanks @dims for building out the test pipeline and @mrhillsman for leading the OpenLab efforts that are reporting back to the test grid. @RuiChen for his contributions to the testing effort. Amazing work for the last six months. In other words, if the external cloud provider ci conformance tests we do in OpenLab are not passing, it will be one of the signals used for blocking the release. OpenStack and GCE are the first two clouds to achieve this and it is a significant accomplishment for the OpenLab team and the OpenStack community overall regarding our relationship with the Kubernetes community. Thanks again Chris, Dims, Joe, Liusheng, Chenrui, and Zhuli for the work you have done and continue to do in this space. Personally I hope we take a moment to really consider this milestone and work to ensure OpenLab's continued success as we embark on working on other integrations. OpenDev CI/CD: a collaborative event co-located w/ Vancouver Summit

Hi everyone, As you know, last year we launched a new annual collaborative working event, OpenDev Edge, that was focused on edge computing. The 2017 event proved to be very productive and was the catalyst that launched our active Edge Computing Group that meets weekly and recently published a whitepaper. Information about activities happening within the Edge Strategic Focus Area can be found here: openstack.org/edge <http://openstack.org/edge> This year, OpenDev will be focused on continuous integration, deployment and delivery (CI/CD) and co-located with the OpenStack Summit in Vancouver. OpenDev CI/CD <http://2018.opendevconf.com/>, will run Tuesday-Wednesday (May 22-23) in parallel with the Summit that runs Monday-Thursday. All CI/CD related content during the week will be scheduled inside the OpenDev event. OpenDev CI/CD is located in a dedicated space on the 3rd floor of the Convention Centre. Summit attendees with Full Access level passes will be able to attend OpenDev CI/CD with their Summit badge. However, attendees who only wish to participate in OpenDev CI/CD and not the week-long Summit, may register specifically for OpenDev CI/CD. A collaborative effort across 10 organizations (AT&T, B.Yond, Cisco, Ericsson, HPE, IMT Atlantique, Inmarsat, Red Hat, Verizon and Walmart Labs), the paper outlines use cases and technical requirements for edge computing. The white paper is a result of efforts kicked off at the OpenDev Edge event in September 2017, and the Edge Computing Group will continue their work at the Project Teams Gathering in Dublin this month. Vancouver Summit Last week, the Vancouver Summit CFP closed and several organizations submitted topics around their use case for the first time including Target, Progressive Insurance and JPMorgan Chase, and Worldpay. Additional users including Wells Fargo, TELUS, Riot Games and China Railway Corporation. The expansion of the Summit content to cover open infrastructure has also brought exciting new submissions across the topics of Container Infrastructure and Edge Computing, including submissions from Google and Microsoft cloud teams. Community voting opens next week - check out these sessions among many others. Note: the agenda is still going through the community selection process, so not all of these users may be chosen to speak in Vancouver. Hi everyone, Today, we opened the Call for Presentations <https://www.openstack.org/summit/vancouver-2018/call-for-presentations/> for the Vancouver Summit <https://www.openstack.org/summit/vancouver-2018/>, which will take place May 21-24. The deadline to submit your proposal is February 8th. What’s New? We’re focused on open infrastructure integration. The Summit has evolved over the years to cover more than just OpenStack, but we’re making an even bigger effort to attract speakers across the open infrastructure ecosystem. In addition to OpenStack-related sessions, we’ll be featuring the newest project at the Foundation -- Kata Containers -- as well as recruiting many others from projects like Ansible, Ceph, Kubernetes, ONAP and many more. We’ve also organized Tracks around specific problem domains. We encourage you to submit proposals covering OpenStack and the “open infrastructure” tools you’re using, as well as the integration work needed to address these problem domains. We also encourage you to invite peers from other open source communities to come speak and collaborate. The Tracks are: CI/CD Container Infrastructure Edge Computing HPC / GPU / AI Open Source Community Private & Hybrid Cloud Public Cloud Telecom & NFV Where previously we had Track Chairs, we now have Programming Committees <https://www.openstack.org/summit/vancouver-2018/call-for-presentations/sele…> for each Track, made up of both Members and a Chair (or co-chairs). We’re also recruiting members and chairs from many different open source communities working in open infrastructure, in addition to the many familiar faces in the OpenStack community who will lead the effort. If you’re interested in nominating yourself or someone else to be a member of the Summit Programming Committee for a specific Track, please fill out the nomination form <https://openstackfoundation.formstack.com/forms/openstackvancouver2018_prog…>. Nominations will close on January 26, 2018. Again, the deadline to submit proposals <https://www.openstack.org/summit/vancouver-2018/call-for-presentations/> is February 8, 2018. Please note topic submissions for the OpenStack Forum (planning/working sessions with OpenStack devs and operators) will open at a later date. We can’t wait to see you in Vancouver! OpenStack Summit Vancouver: Sponsor Sales Open

All, I wanted to make you aware that today we launched the sponsorship contract for the Vancouver Summit, happening May 21 - 25, 2018. Quite a few companies have already claimed a spot. Since booth selection is done in order the signed contracts are received, we always encourage companies to move fast :) Find the prospectus and sponsorship agreement here: https://www.openstack.org/summit/vancouver-2018/sponsors/ You’ve probably noticed the OpenStack Summits have covered more than OpenStack for a while. The event has really evolved to become the home of open infrastructure collaboration, driven by user demand. You’ll see us increasing our focus on “Open Infrastructure” at the Summits in 2018, which means a greater breadth of technologies, including new projects like Kata Containers and the integration work with things like Kubernetes. Content will align with the Strategic Focus areas we've defined for the Foundation, including datacenter cloud technologies, edge computing, container infrastructure, CI/CD and machine learning. We’re also working to make the Berlin contract available soon because we’ve had a lot of initial demand. Looking forward to seeing everyone in Dublin soon for the PTG, and again in Vancouver in May!
