OpenStack 'Rocky' Press Coverage Highlights

Hello, Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Rocky release! It was a great milestone for the community, and we received positive press coverage last week. During the Rocky cycle, we highlighted improvements to Ironic, which enable the OpenStack ecosystem to offer bare metal, virtual machines and containers in one platform, and also positions OpenStack bare metal clouds as a strong underlying infrastructure option for Kubernetes. In terms of container support, another milestone we achieved during the Rocky cycle was getting Magnum certified as a Kubernetes installer. We also highlighted work to improve upgrades, as well as emerging projects including Cyborg (lifecycle management for hardware accelerators), Qinling (serverless functions for OpenStack clouds) and Masakari (HA). We were also able to include a strong user quote in the press release: "At Oath, OpenStack manages hundreds of thousands of bare metal compute resources in our data centers. We have made significant changes to our supply chain process using OpenStack, fulfilling common bare metal quota requests within minutes,” said James Penick, IaaS Architect at Oath. “We're looking forward to deploying the Rocky release to take advantage of its numerous enhancements such as BIOS management, which will further streamline how we maintain, manage and deploy our infrastructure." Help Needed - User Survey Deadline

Hi everyone, I wanted to make sure that everyone knows that the 2018 OpenStack User Survey is only open for a few more days. It’s incredibly important that your teams and customers participate in this survey to not only share feedback with the development community, but also share deployment information that gives us a better picture around OpenStack adoption. Another valuable use for the data is in educating analysts. For example, a Gartner report was just published with some unflattering commentary and data around OpenStack, and we expect this year’s user survey data to be very valuable in refuting some of the claims. In short, The User Survey is the opportunity to arm your teams, the community, and analysts with data around OpenStack momentum and adoption. The deadline is next Tuesday, August 21 at 11:59pm PT. OpenStack Summit Berlin Agenda Preview

Hi everyone, The Berlin Summit agenda goes live next week, but I wanted to share an agenda preview of several users who are already secured to share their stories around infrastructure use cases including AI, Edge Computing, CI/CD and even a workshop around OpenStack Upgrades. Stay tuned for next week when the full agenda goes live! BMW will discuss the CI requirements for software projects at BMW like autonomous driving and how they use Zuul to develop software at scale. Oerlikon, a textile manufacturing company based in Switzerland, will detail its OpenStack-based edge computing architecture and how they make 365,000 bobbins per day, each bobbin laden with enough yarn to go from the earth to the moon and back. The technology team from Ocado, the world’s largest online-only supermarket based in the UK, will share how it relies on OpenStack for minimal downtime in powering its robot-managed warehouses. Metronom, the IT supplier for Metro AG, a wholesale business operating in 25 countries, will share its experience with OpenStack and how open source has had an influence on its internal culture. Oath upgraded its OpenStack environment from Juno to Ocata with almost zero impact on its customers. At the Berlin Summit, the Oath team will lead an upgrades workshop to address one of the most common challenges shared by OpenStack operators. The OpenStack Foundation will provide an update on its strategy as well as sessions on the projects hosted by the OSF—Airship, Kata Containers, OpenStack, StarlingX and Zuul. Additional sessions will emphasize numerous open source technologies relevant to infrastructure operators, including Ansible, Ceph, Docker, Envoy, Istio, Kata Containers, Kubernetes, ONAP, OPNFV, Spinnaker, Tungsten Fabric and many more. OpenLab Cross-community Impact

Hi everyone, I know we have sent out quite a bit of information over the past few days with the OpenStack Summit and other updates recently. Additionally there are plenty of meetings we all attend. I just want to take time to point to something very significant in my opinion and again give big thanks to Chris, Dims, Liusheng, Chenrui, Zhuli, Joe (gophercloud), and anyone else contributing to OpenLab. A member of the release team working on the testing infrastructure for Kubernetes did a shoutout to the team for the following: (AishSundar) Shoutout to @dims and OpenStack team for quickly getting their 1.11 Conformance results piped to CI runs and contributing results to Conformance dashboard ! https://k8s-testgrid.appspot.com/sig-release-1.11-all#Conformance%20-%20Ope… Here is why this is significant and those working on this who I previously mentioned should get recognition: (hogepodge) OpenStack and GCE are the first two clouds that will release block on conformance testing failures. Thanks @dims for building out the test pipeline and @mrhillsman for leading the OpenLab efforts that are reporting back to the test grid. @RuiChen for his contributions to the testing effort. Amazing work for the last six months. In other words, if the external cloud provider ci conformance tests we do in OpenLab are not passing, it will be one of the signals used for blocking the release. OpenStack and GCE are the first two clouds to achieve this and it is a significant accomplishment for the OpenLab team and the OpenStack community overall regarding our relationship with the Kubernetes community. Thanks again Chris, Dims, Joe, Liusheng, Chenrui, and Zhuli for the work you have done and continue to do in this space. Personally I hope we take a moment to really consider this milestone and work to ensure OpenLab's continued success as we embark on working on other integrations.
