bylaws change proposed for multiple Vice Chairs

Hi everyone, In the January 26th board meeting, we discussed the process for electing multiple individuals to the role of Vice Chair, and noted that a small bylaws change would be necessary to make this possible. After a few rounds of refinement and legal review, here's the proposed update to the bylaws, allowing more than one Vice Chair. I've attached it as plain text, and as a PDF showing the differences in the update. The sentence about the Vice Chairs standing in for the Chairman mentions the "order" of the Vice Chairs. The intention here is that the Chairman and the Vice Chairs will set a rotation schedule, so at any point in the year everyone knows which Vice Chair is "on call" to stand in for the Chairman. This can be as simple as alternating months (for example, Alice is on call in March, Bob is on call in April, Alice is on call again in May, etc...), but leaving the schedule up to the Chairman and Vice Chairs gives us flexibility to easily change it if one of the Vice Chairs needs to swap out a month for a family holiday, or busy month at work, or whatever might come up. The alternation allows a fair division of work between the Vice Chairs. This proposed bylaws change will be up for discussion and vote in the upcoming board meeting on March 2nd. Thanks, Allison

2020 OpenInfra Foundation Annual Report Now Available

Hi everyone, The Foundation’s 2020 annual report is now available. The Open Infrastructure community had a productive and successful year in spite of the unprecedented global challenges in 2020. Together with the 60+ organizations who joined the launch of the Open Infrastructure Foundation and over 110,000 community members, we are starting the next decade of open infrastructure tackling challenges including hardware diversification, deployment diversification, government regulations like data sovereignty, and the availability of more open source than ever. Each community member, working group, SIG, and contributor was instrumental in continuing to support the Open Infrastructure Foundation's mission: building open source communities that write software to run in production. The 2020 Annual Report was published today highlighting the achievements across the community and the goals for the year ahead. Let’s break down some of the highlights of last year: • The OpenStack Foundation took the next step in its ongoing evolution by becoming the Open Infrastructure Foundation to support open infrastructure for a market estimated at $20 billion USD. • Over 60 global organizations joined in establishing the Open Infrastructure Foundation to build the next decade of infrastructure for AI, 5G and edge computing, including 9 Platinum Members: Ant Group, AT&T, Ericsson, Facebook, FiberHome, Huawei, Red Hat, Wind River and Tencent. • OpenStack, one of the top three most active open source projects with 15 million cores in production, marked its 10th anniversary in July 2020. • The OpenInfra Foundation announced its support for the Magma project, confirmed OpenInfra Labs as its newest pilot project and StarlingX as a top-level Open Infrastructure project. • The OpenInfra community became more accessible internationally through the first virtual Open Infrastructure Summit that gathered 10,000 attendees from 120+ different countries to discuss more than 30 open source projects. The OpenInfra Foundation would like to extend a huge thanks to the global community for all of the work that went into 2020 and is continuing in 2021 to help people build and operate open infrastructure. [board][interop] Is it time to revisit: Trademarks, Branding, and Interoperability?

Greetings everyone! Over the past few weeks I’ve been in a number of discussions regarding some of our most very fun topics. Branding, Trademarks, and Interoperability. I think this is a good time to revisit these topics because of the conversion from the OpenStack Foundation to the Open Infrastructure Foundation. The further broadening of the larger community represents both an opportunity and a checkpoint in which we should likely ask ourselves some questions to help guide our future path. I think what has made some of these discussions difficult in the past is because we intertwined the topics. To meet the perceived needs of the past, we ended up building and encoding specific models and concepts when the only project was OpenStack. We were trying to foster and develop an expansive ecosystem at that time. Then, it likely seemed logical to encode this as part of the bylaws. Except those processes have left us with something that is difficult to amend, change, or adapt moving forward. And even that seems like a daunting issue in itself, before we consider that non-openstack projects have different needs. This does not mean we can not nor should not ask ourselves what is important. We must identify where we want to see things in the future for such programs. If we don’t identify these things, then we can not measure future success nor possibly identify new needs. Besides, who else is better suited to lead projects to become more agile and responsive to emergent needs if not the board itself? So with those thoughts in mind, I would like for us to all mentally take a step back and try to answer some basic questions to help frame future discussion. * Where do we see the value in the trademark and associated branding? What is important? What is less important? * How do we see branding and trademarks evolving now that the foundation scope has expanded? * What is the desired end goal of trademark and branding programs? Are there multiple specific end goals? And then there is the topic of interoperability. Looking forward it seems like there is more than one level of interoperability that needs to be thought of and cared about. * At what level should we, the board, encourage cross-community/cross-project/product/service interoperability? * What is the end goal of interoperability in our evolved scope? * Is the board the right level at which to have the discussions and ultimately the technical management of the fine details regarding interoperability? I’m posing the last question for a very important reason. Our scope has widened. We have zoomed out. The bigger picture is our focus as the board. The lower level details of any project’s interoperability do require fine details and specific context. To unfortunately use another photography analogy, the repeated zoom in and zoom out does not help us keep our focus on the bigger picture. As a board, we need to track the picture consistently and constantly, which is the only way we can best frame our discussions and resulting outcomes. I hope this email brings about discussion on these topics. Not necessarily a discussion of how or what, but more of a discussion of means to unlock and enable. Thanks, -Julia
