Hi, There's a standing desire by some (many?) board members for the foundation-board mailing list to be made public so that anyone can follow their discussions. Personally, I'd also like a way for folks who aren't on the board to easily be able to participate in any board discussions. However, there needs to be some way for board members to easily separate the discussion between board members from the discussion with the wider foundation membership. I think of this is an "inner circle"[1] mailing list setup: - Two mailing lists - "inner circle" and "everyone else", lets call them the IC and EE lists - Discussions on IC are mirrored to EE - IC member starts thread on IC, the thread is also started on EE - IC member replies to thread on IC, the reply also goes to EE - EE member starts thread on EE, only goes there - EE member replies to thread on EE, whether it was started on IC and EE, then the reply only goes to EE - IC member replies to thread on EE, the reply also goes only to EE I've come across cases where this would be useful several times - has anyone seen a mailman configuration that resembles this? I was looking at old meeting minutes and noticed this on the October 15 meeting: 15:30-16:30 - Discussion items * January election plans * Discuss proposal for certification program * Review trademark policy * Review mechanism for approving and publishing minutes I searched the emails in the foundation but did not see any information on this issue. I am a big fan of having an OpenStack Certification but I currently only see Rackspace (http://www.rackspacetraining.com/) Is the Foundation considering the creation of a set of standards that an individual must meet to be "OpenStack Certified" at which time organizations in the community could then create training classes to meet those standards? I look forward to hearing the view of the foundation on this issue and learning more about how Dell can possibly get involved to start increasing the number of OpenStack Certified professionals globally. Hi everyone, We commissioned a Q4 2012 media analysis from TrendKite and wanted to share the results. It's pretty amazing to see how OpenStack is driving trends and coverage of the cloud computing industry, and you can see additional detail by region and company. I discussed the report in the Board Meeting on Tuesday, and received some very positive feedback. One of the next steps for future reports will be to include vCloud. [OpenStack Foundation] Board Meeting - February 12th

The Board of Directors had another full meeting this past Tuesday in San Francisco. Most directors were able to be present in person. We met from 10:00am to 6:00pm, covering almost every item on the planned agenda: http://wiki.openstack.org/Governance/Foundation/12Feb2013BoardMeeting We started out with a brief review of existing Board communication policies and the Board's approval of the previous meeting's minutes. I'll post these later. The wiki is error-ing out right now when I try to create the new page. Ryan Lane joined to present an overview of progress on the User Committee with Tim Bell who was attending by phone. The User Committee has a number of tasks in flight and plans on providing an update at the upcoming OpenStack Summit in Portland in April (http://www.openstack.org/summit) As they have mentioned previously, there is a Google Doc available for comment which collects much of their thinking to date: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yD8TfqUik2dt5xo_jMVHMl7tw9oIJnEndLK8YqE… This was followed by an introduction and discussion of patent issues from some members of the Legal Affairs Committee, Alice King of Rackspace and Nissa Strottman of HP. After lunch, Sean Roberts and I provided an update on the financial standing of the Foundation and the activities of the Finance Committee. Joshua McKenty then led a discussion on setting up a working group to review and formalize policies and procedures around the disclosure of confidential and sensitive information and materials from the Board. Various Board members volunteered to participate, and Josh will be publishing the group's work more broadly as it is established. Following the presentations from these groups, Mark Collier, Lauren Sell and I discussed the results of the 4th quarter in the areas of community and ecosystem growth and development activity. We then ran through plans for the remainder of the year, and the Board approved an updated budget and forecast for 2013, taking into account additional income and expenses (primarily associated with the twice annual summits). Lauren gave a more detailed look into community building activities around marketing and events and discussed the growth of the community marketing group (http://wiki.openstack.org/Governance/Foundation/Marketing) The Board then spent most of the remainder of the afternoon discussing the strategic, long-term opportunity for OpenStack. Board members divided into groups and brainstormed activities that could help OpenStack deployers and community members, as well as encourage innovation around the primary OpenStack software. A number of actions for the Board and Foundation staff will flow out of these discussions. In the final minutes, we touched on the Individual Member Director election process, but as we were running out of time, the Board reestablished an election committee to review the proposals from the previous cycle and make recommendations for future changes. The Foundation staff were also in town for planning sessions and after the Board meeting both groups met for a dinner where the OpenStack discussions continued well into the night. All, Very sorry for the late delivery of this (you may have seen the issues we've had with the openstack wiki of late). TRANSPARENCY COMMITTEE PROPOSAL: Today's action: Collect volunteers. GOALS: To improve transparency and foster collaboration between the foundation members and members of the board, technical committee, user committee and other committees. Specifically, to draft statements and prototype systems changes for board review and approval. HISTORY: OpenStack, due primarily to its explosive growth, has struggled with both real and perceived transparency issues for much of the past two years. Many of these issues (ShanleyGate, the various concerns over ballot stuffing, lack of access to board materials) have come down to a simple lack of education and documentation around the legal issues involved. In other cases, we have had an impedance mismatch between the tools available, and the communication style of the members or directors.
