[openstack-community] OpenStackDay Organizer Question
Hi OSD organizers, I have a question from one of the OpenStack Day organizers and hoping that this group can answer their question: How much bandwidth per attendee are people budgeting for an OpenStack Day? Thank you for your feedback. Denise Hello OpenStack Day Leaders, This email is an invitation to participate on our public mailing list for community event organisers, community@lists.openstack.org. In the past, this list has been the place for announcements and discussion around several interesting topics such as recognising user contributors, changing the summit speaking submission voting process, designing the speakers bureau and implementing the official user group program. With more and more OpenStack Days events happening around the world, we could really use your help to disseminate your knowledge and share best practices for those starting out and those looking to improve. This mailing list provides a home for these discussions and we hope that you will accept our invitation to join. Regards, Denise & Tom at the Foundation
I don’t think I understand the question – can you clarify? I would expect attendees to participate in 100% of the event. I think the question is here is about wifi bandwidth…large conferences and events usually bring in a wifi outfitter and purchase temporary bandwidth packages to ensure smooth network access for attendees. Those packages are sometimes sold as “X Mbps per attendee * Y number of attendees == $$”. At Your Service, Mark T. Voelker

I think this question was directed towards "networking bandwidth" for Wifi setup purposes. On Thu, Jul 14, 2016 at 10:41 AM, Barrett, Carol L < carol.l.barrett@intel.com> wrote:

This was my question for the OpenStack Days - East event. I just want to make sure we have enough bandwidth behind the Wifi since the OpenStack Summits do an excellent job of making sure we have plenty of bandwidth and there are few things in life worse than slow wifi. My vendors is recommending 50/50 Mbps pipe for the event which we are expecting 600 people. Does anyone know if there is a rule of thumb of how much badnwidth per user/attendee makes sense? Intuitively that sounds a bit light on to me - I can find out what we usually provision for linux.conf.au which is of similar size if slightly different audience if you like ? Cheers, Hugh
Here's a helpful Bandwidth calculator: http://www.psav.com/bandwidth_estimator/ There are a few others out there <https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=bandwidth%20per%20person%20for%20wifi> if you'd like to compare/contrast. I'd say all of our attendees have high bandwidth requirements. Hugh Blemings wrote:

We can also ask our summit event management partner (fntech) to share their best practices. I know that bandwidth is just one of many factors. On July 14, 2016 12:20:50 PM Jimmy McArthur <jimmy@openstack.org> wrote:

The other important factor for OS East (and just as applicable to OS Summit and LCA) is that most attendees will have MULTIPLE devices. I'd expect 2 per person to be on and working (and a 3rd low bandwidth device for their e-book reader.) This doubling and tripling is what confuses most organizers.
