Hello, we just recently held our first OSUG in Poland with accompanying Google+ Hangout & IRC Chat session. To our own surprise, we welcomed attendees from 9 different countries - roughly 50 people joined us at peak times. We are now planning monthly meetups (upcoming one will be on July 11th) and we again will have Google+ Hangout & IRC Chat sessions. One of our key takeaways was that many attendees from emerging regions like Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia Pacific were not able to join our Google+ Hangout due to bandwidth limitations. We spoke with OpenStackers in Ghana, Ethiopia, India and we came up with the following idea: Why don't we transcribe our Google+ Hangout sessions and distribute that content live via IRC? Obviously, we would need the help a professional transcription service provider and I was wondering if anyone would be interested to support that initiative with a donation? The OpenStack community would benefit in two ways: 1) We would significantly lower barriers for participants from emerging countries. 2) In each online session we would generate a lot of written content that could be reused in various manners - for blog posts, wikis, localization into other languages (as we all know, it's easier to translate texts than videos). Our Polish OSUG would facilitate that service. What are your thoughts? Would you be willing to support that initiative? If so, we would hammer out the details and present you a detailed plan including exact costs for that service. All the best, Rafael

[openstack-community] Dumb question regarding swift-proxy: where does one find swift_auth?

Hi all, I've hunted high and low for the solution to this problem. I'm slowly working through setting up a test virtual machine cluster using OpenStack and Ceph. The network has two management nodes, which will run the cluster controller daemons... two storage nodes using Ceph and Swift, and two compute nodes. The OS is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS AMD64, and I have the following APT source listed: > deb http://ubuntu-cloud.archive.canonical.com/ubuntu precise-updates/grizzly main I've followed the OpenStack Install and Deploy Manual (Grizzly, Compute 2013.1, Network 2013.1, Object Storage 1.7.6) PDF... I've been switching between that and the high availability guide, and so presently I've got highly available MySQL, Keystone and Glance. I am working on getting swift-proxy going on the two management nodes (which will have 10GbE cards for the task) and swift on the storage nodes. [openstack-community] OpenStack Rhône-Alpes inaugural meet-up

Hi all, With the concentration of OpenStack interest around Grenoble, Lyon, Geneva and Chambéry, which was obvious on the plane home from Portland in August, we're kicking off a new local user group, with regular meet-ups, in the Rhône-Alpes region of France (and neighbouring areas like Romande Switzerland). Our first meet-up will be happening on Thursday 27th of June, on HP's campus in Grenoble. We're still sorting out the final line-up, but the successful meet-up formula will be followed: a few short (French language) presentations on OpenStack related topics, followed by a friendly meet & greet around a glass of fruit juice (more or less fermented and aged). [openstack-community] 1st OpenStack User Group Meetup Poland: Recorded Sessions & Lessons Learned

We held our first OpenStack User Group Meetup in Poland yesterday with up to 50 people joining us at peak times, both physically as well as online via Google Hangout and IRC Chat. It was a pleasure and honour for us to talk with some of the best known and most sophisticated OpenStackers in the world, and we are very thankful for their attendance. Expect most IT people to know little to zero about OpenStack. It might be the largest open source cloud software project globally with hundreds of companies backing the initiative with hundreds of coders and thousands of members, yet there are still zillions of system admins and developers out there who have no clue what OpenStack is about. Educate them all, one geek at a time. Tune into the global OpenStack community. When you’re small, you have to think big. We have less than a handful of OpenStack deployments in Poland, hence there are very few experienced OpenStackers able to share their knowledge. As a small community, we have to think out of your (local) box and attract the brightest OpenStackers in the world to educate our community and we also need to find ways to give back to the broader OpenStack community. OpenStack is an open source community driven effort, it’s all about a mutual, respectful relationship with other OpenStackers, it’s about giving and taking, so let’s do it right. Google Hangout & IRC Chat rock. It’s exciting to talk with OpenStackers from the United States, Switzerland, Kenya and India at the same time. We obviously lack resources to fly in speakers from all over the world. But thanks to Google Hangout & IRC Chat we were able to attract the smartest OpenStackers from virtually any place on this planet. At the same time, we contribute back with our online sessions to the OpenStack community far beyond our country borders: We welcomed attendees from 9 different countries in Europe, Africa and even Asia Pacific - most of which face similar challenges to ours. But when small, local OpenStack communities join forces, there is an opportunity to create a huge multinational community spreading across multiple regions. It’s the power of many in action. Pick your audience wisely: Only the brave. It’s only possible to start a revolution with brave people, and OpenStack is a revolution. We learned that you need to attract the brave ones in the first place: People who don’t shy away from asking questions in front of an audience, even in spite of a severe language barrier. People, who are willing to make a difference, who show up at the meetup with burning questions and who want to apply their newly acquired skills the next day at work. We need to listen carefully to them and tailor our meetups around their needs. The vast majority of the IT crowd will follow later, but you can only start a movement with a small bunch of wildly determined, super-pragmatic, brave people. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW8amMCVAJQ Address real life problems. Some of our attendees are contemplating to build private clouds or to deploy their applications on alternative public cloud platforms, but they don’t necessarily have OpenStack on top of their mind. We realized that we primarily have to address their questions such as: tactical choice of hypervisors or capacity planning for cloud storage, automated deployment and management, application development and deployment. Our learning: Relate to people’s everyday experience reality, and then expand the conversation to OpenStack - rather than the other way round. Keep it short and focused. We challenged our attendees with four speaker sessions in a row from 5.00 pm to 9.00 pm. Our key learning: We need to keep our meetups shorter and focus on one specific topic at a time. Also, people are keen on diving deeply into technical conversations on topics they are interested in (we feel that an OpenStack User Group meetup is not necessarily the right place for level presentations on OpenStack). Do it again, again and again. We will host our meetups and the accompanying Google Hangout & IRC Chat sessions on a monthly basis. Thank you Aaron, but I tested db_base plugin and I realized that Compute (nova) uses L3 extension by default. I need to test some basic stuff without network and I don't want to configure a Netwrk Service in this case. Moreover, I want to know basic flow of Quantum plugin because we are developing a Quantum Network Service and we need to know messages and data sent to configured Quantum plugin. Thank you.

[openstack-community] Does Tempest support test nova-network cases?

Hi All, From the current, stable Grizzly or stable Folsom Tempest, I found only quantum network client is provided under /tempest/services, but no nova-network is provided. And also there's no corresponding test case for nova-network. So, I would like to confirm it. Is is true that only quantum network test is provided since Tempest is launched? So far it seems though that: * 'linux' is an unsupported OS for using the browser * latest version of skype implies the stuff that isn't in the linux version * microsoft lync - unlikely * google chat is failing via empathy for an unknown reason. * I don't have an ipad * am not willing to phone in internationally. Hope it goes well but bluejeans may not be a great hosting service for a community that is largely linux based. Let us know a link. If you have suggestions for something like bluejeans that works with more operating systems and clients we're totally open to switching. [openstack-community] Mailing lists in non-English languages

Hello folks, I would like to test the idea of opening the list server lists.openstack.org to mailing lists in other languages than English. At the moment lists.openstack.org only supports English for the user interfaces, archives included. But mailman supports also different languages and our international community is growing, so I think it shouldn't be too hard to help discussions happen in other languages. Hi all, SUSE has generously donated a booth (#340) and marketing support to the OpenStack Foundation at [http://www.cloudcomputingexpo.com/] Cloud Expo East 2013 in NYC's Javits Convention Center June 10-13. This event attracts senior technologists including CIOs, CTOs, directors of infrastructure, VPs of technology, IT directors and managers, network and storage managers, network engineers, enterprise architects, and communications and networking specialists. This year, Cloud Expo combines Cloud and Big Data, both on the Expo floor and in the sessions. As usual, we're looking for several booth volunteers. I will be there for setup/teardown and the entire show. Hello, We're building a public OpenStack implementation in Nairobi and over time, the rest of the continent. Is anybody on the list interested in talking about OpenStack in the African context or in starting a virtual meetup about it? I'd like to get more feedback about it and meet more people who are interested in the logistics of launching a cloud platform here. I'm also excited to get people not on the continent in the group if they have an interest. Based on feedback, I'll try to set up some sort of Hangout or something along those lines.
