Hello everyone!
At the OpenInfra Summit in early June, I hosted a Forum around user groups and OpenInfra Days. We had a great discussion on numerous topics regarding the state of user groups. Please see etherpad for details [1]
One of the larger topics we discussed was instituting the OpenInfra Foundation as the organizer for each user group on Meetup.com and other platforms used to organize events [2].
Naturally during the pandemic, fewer meetups were hosted and at the same time, many of the organizers changed positions which moved them away from their work with user groups. In some cases, we are able to reach out to the organizer to help find a replacement, but others have been unresponsive. In cases where the organizer is unresponsive, the group remains inactive unless the Foundation terminates the group's subscription which forces the organizer out of their position. See Meetup's guidelines on this situation.[3]
It was decided during the Forum to move forward with terminating the subscriptions of inactive groups, which after 2 weeks will kick the current organizers out of their position. After this two-week period, the OpenInfra Foundation will be able to step in as the organizer and reinstitute the subscription.
If you are a current organizer and would like to prevent this process from happening, please reach out to me.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Cheers,
Helena
