Ben, I don't think meetup.com is mandatory at all. Any group is welcome 
to use any tool they prefer. I, Marton, Sina and Tristan are working on 
a solution for the groups that don't want or can't use meetup.com. Until 
then, feel free to email me the dates, url, name of the events you're 
organising and I'll add them to the page http://openstack.org/events
