[openstack-community] Mailing lists in non-English languages
Hello folks, I would like to test the idea of opening the list server lists.openstack.org to mailing lists in other languages than English. At the moment lists.openstack.org only supports English for the user interfaces, archives included. But mailman supports also different languages and our international community is growing, so I think it shouldn't be too hard to help discussions happen in other languages. Do you think it would be useful for your groups to have one place hosted by on the OpenStack infrastructure, where discussions can happen in your local language? /stef -- Ask and answer questions on https://ask.openstack.org
Do you think it would be useful for your groups to have one place hosted by on the OpenStack infrastructure, where discussions can happen in your local language? Sure! It would be easier for new members to find & join discussions in local languages. We have a Polish mailing list for our OSUG and I assume more people would be using it if they learned about it through OpenStack.org On Mon, May 20, 2013 at 11:21 PM, Stefano Maffulli <stefano@openstack.org>wrote:

I will discuss with our members at Korea. Having mailing list is generally a good idea, however having too much communication method is sometimes not better than focused few. :) IMHO, how useful it will be depends on each user group's current setting. Hi all, I posted this issue to the Japanese community ML which is currently hosted under GoogleGroups. I'm not sure what people say, but now we have about 900 subscribers on the Google Groups, and I'm feeling migration could be a bit tough work for us... Of couse, the situation depends on countries/regions, and I support the idea having language specific community mailing lists under openstack.org. :) Best Regards, Maasnori / JOSUG From: Jaesuk Ahn <bluejay.ahn@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [openstack-community] Mailing lists in non-English languages Date: Tue, 21 May 2013 06:49:14 +0900

I totally understand that. It's all good, I made the proposal mostly thinking about the groups that don't have a tool for discussions yet.

Indeed, I don't think using lists.openstack.org should be mandatory. It's just another option. /stef
Dear Stefano, We love the idea to have a mailing list in Vietnamese. Please let us know when this could be implemented. Thank you for the enthusiasm, it's good to feel this excitement :) I have made a test with a mailing list in Italian and testing a new way to create mailing lists. There are still some small issues to address, like the GUI is getting mixed English and Italian, but this may be good enough to start. Basically what you need to do to create a new mailing list is to: - clone the openstack-infra/config repository https://github.com/openstack-infra/config $ git clone git@github.com:openstack-infra/config.git - follow the gerrit workflow: create a branch Make sure you have the latest upstream changes: git remote update git checkout master git pull origin master git checkout -b VIETNAMESE #for example More details and instructions on how to use git review on the wiki: https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/GerritWorkflow - edit the file modules/openstack_project/manifests/lists.pp adding something along the lines: maillist { 'openstack-vi': ensure => present, admin => 'YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS', password => $listpassword, description => 'DESCRIPTION OF THE LIST IN VIETNAMESE', webserver => $listdomain, mailserver => $listdomain, } - make sure that you use spaces, not tabs; and make sure that the => are aligned in the editor - commit the changes $ git commit -a $ git review Send a message to this mailing list with the rewiew URL and somebody of the Infrastructure team will review it. If you're not already familiar with git review and prefer not to learn it, I can create the list for you. Let me know what you prefer. Cheers, stef
Hello Stefano, I'm from Brazil and it would be great to have a list in our native language (Brazilian Portuguese). We could also suggest a web site such as br.openstack.org in Portuguese to help garnering attention to the Openstack project in our country. We have lot of people that do not speak English here. Additionally, I can help offering a server to run the mailman list and a webserver in my company, if necessary. Please let me know if I can help you to make this idea happen. Hello Stefano, I'm from Vietnam and I agree with your idea about the native language. Now we just discussed on a fan page on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/IaaS.VN and so on https://www.facebook.com/VietOpenStack?fref=ts If possible, I suggest a sub domain such as vn.list.openstack.org to help garnering attention to the Openstack project in our country. https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/OpenStackUserGroups#Brazil has a fairly active google group managed by Alexandre. I think we should avoid creating a new contact point for the Brazilian Portuguese community. I'm copying Alexandre to this message to get his opinion too.
We could also suggest a web site such as br.openstack.org in Portuguese to help garnering attention to the Openstack project in our country.
We're working on a solution for this problem, a site to help all user groups around the world organize information in their language. Stay tuned for announcements in the next weeks.

We can sure make use of a person that is at least familiar with mailman as there is an increasing amount of small things that need to be done. If you have such person available for a few hours, please contact me in private. Cheers, stef -- Ask and answer questions on https://ask.openstack.org
