Edge Computing White Paper
Yesterday, the Edge Computing Group published a white paper: Cloud Edge Computing: Beyond the Data Center <https://www.openstack.org/edge-computing/> which has already earned some coverage in The New Stack <https://thenewstack.io/open-infrastructure-operators-rally-around-edge-computing/> and Computer Weekly <http://www.computerweekly.com/news/252435050/OpenStack-Overcoming-edge-computing-adoption-barriers-demands-open-source-community-collaboration> as well as interest from several other reporters. A collaborative effort across 10 organizations (AT&T, B.Yond, Cisco, Ericsson, HPE, IMT Atlantique, Inmarsat, Red Hat, Verizon and Walmart Labs), the paper outlines use cases and technical requirements for edge computing. The white paper is a result of efforts kicked off at the OpenDev Edge event in September 2017, and the Edge Computing Group will continue their work at the Project Teams Gathering in Dublin this month.

Vancouver Summit
Last week, the Vancouver Summit CFP closed and several organizations submitted topics around their use case for the first time including Target, Progressive Insurance and JPMorgan Chase, and Worldpay. Additional users including Wells Fargo, TELUS, Riot Games and China Railway Corporation. The expansion of the Summit content to cover open infrastructure has also brought exciting new submissions across the topics of Container Infrastructure and Edge Computing, including submissions from Google and Microsoft cloud teams. Community voting opens next week - check out these sessions among many others.

Note: the agenda is still going through the community selection process, so not all of these users may be chosen to speak in Vancouver.

Both registration and sponsor sales are open for the Vancouver <http://www.openstack.org/summit/vancouver-2018/sponsors> and Berlin Summits <http://www.openstack.org/summit/berlin-2018/sponsors>.

OpenStack Case Study Pipeline
In addition to the organizations in the Summit CFP, there are more case studies currently being developed with Mercedes Benz R&D and The University of Edinburgh. The Foundation team also met with users including the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, Tencent and China Mobile during a trip earlier this month. We are also reaching out to companies in the ecosystem that have case studies developed that can be added to openstack.org/users.

Additionally, an article came out yesterday around Walmart’s cloud footprint referencing their OpenStack environments: Walmart goes to the cloud to close gap with Amazon <https://www.reuters.com/article/us-walmart-cloud/walmart-goes-to-the-cloud-to-close-gap-with-amazon-idUSKCN1FY0K7>.

OpenStack Queens Release
The next release of OpenStack is slated for February 28th and we’ve got some pretty juicy updates across container integration, GPU support, robust enterprise features and ease of use. We’ll be distributing materials to the marketing mailing list next week and scheduling a webinar to preview it with the community on Wednesday at 9 am PT <https://zoom.us/j/384657461>.

New for the Queens release is a “Release Highlights” page. The PTLs have selected these as the most important features for their project in Queens. This is the first iteration of the Release Highlights page and it will be an item discussed at the upcoming PTG; if you have suggestions for future pages, please email anne at openstack.org <mailto:anne at openstack.org>.

Rocky Roadmap
The Roadmap Team will begin generating the roadmap for Rocky and beyond shortly after the Dublin PTG. If you are interested in helping shape the OpenStack Roadmap, please email anne at openstack.org <mailto:anne at openstack.org>.

Kata Containers
Activities are heating up in the Kata Containers community. The Architecture Committee now features five members from Intel, Hyper.sh, Huawei, Google and Microsoft, and the “working committee” (basically the marketing/product committee) is meeting biweekly to build out more content for the website and blog. The community is working toward their first major release expected late Q2. If you’re interested in getting involved in development or marketing efforts, check out the meeting schedule and communications channels on katacontainers.io <https://katacontainers.io/>.
